Unix Systems Services

Home Directory Service

The ITC Home Directory Service provides a home directory for all University faculty, staff, and students which may be accessed from anywhere on the University's network using Unix or Windows file server protocols. ITC also provides an Appleshare gateway which makes it possible for Macintosh computers to also gain access to the same home directory.

The HDS is made up of two Network Appliance model F630 filers, which are configured in a cluster allowing either filer to take over the service of the other in the event one of the filers fails. The Network Appliance operating system offers native NFS (versions 2 and 3) and CIFS protocols.

A Home Directory login program is available for Windows 95, 98, and NT to make it easier to map a home directory as a network drive on those operating systems. To learn more about using the file servers, visit the Home Directory Service web site.
