Information Technology is a term that is used to describe any technology that helps produce, manipulate, store, communicate, or disseminate information. Information Technology is playing an increasingly important role at the University of Virginia. Students, faculty, and staff are using computer technology to support academic, research, and administrative efforts.

As a result, The University of Virginia's physical computing environment is diverse and complex. It consists of a variety of computing platforms, operating systems, peripherals, and network configurations. Most University departments and units purchase and maintain computing equipment located throughout their classrooms, offices, and work areas.

To remain productive, computer users must keep their skills up-to-date. As a computing support person at the University, you may be required to update your knowledge and abilities frequently to support the evolving computing needs of your specific area. The information in this unit is a comprehensive survey of the University's physical computing environment and resources that will prove useful to you as a local computing support person.
