Survival Skills U.Va. Computing Accounts |
|
Among the various types of computing accounts available at U.Va. the most common is an account that allows you access to electronic mail, or email. Email is quickly becoming a way of life. Professors use email to communicate with students and staff members use email to communicate with one another. One of the more common types of accounts for storage of electronic mail is a Central Mail Service (CMS) account. With a CMS account, software such as Simeon or Eudora, can be used to read the email. CMS accounts are automatically created for all incoming undergraduate students. New faculty and staff, however, must apply for such an account. Any member of The University community may apply for an account via ITCWeb. Some examples of other computing accounts include:
For all of these accounts, your COMPUTING ID (or LOGIN ID or USER NAME) would be the same. Your password, however, should be different for each account. The requirements for changing a password vary from one account to the next. Depending on your responsibilities, you may also be eligible for computing accounts on the ITC Enterprise Service (mainframe) for accessing the Computerized Accounts Payable and Purchasing Systems (CAPPS), the Integrated Student Information System (ISIS), or the Financial Accounting System (FAS). The computing ID used for these accounts will be a four-character ID starting with the letter "U". Access to these system is achieved by contacting your department's Data Security Contact. If you don't know your Data Security Contact, call the Help Desk at 924-3731. You may also need an account on the Human Resources AS400. For information on those accounts, contact University Human Resources directly. Health System / Computing Services (HS/CS) provides accounts for access to the Medical Center Financial Systems, electronic mail, and their patient information systems (MIS). For more information on these accounts, contact the HS/CS Help Desk at 924-5334. Last, and certainly not least, you might need access to a departmental file server. A system administrator within your department controls the ID and password requirements. For more information on account policies and creating accounts, visit the ITCWeb site:
