Activate Your Computing ID to Access Your UVa Computing Accounts

[May 09, 2008 16:59] The Instructional Toolkit is now available.

Your Computing ID and Accounts

One of the very first things you'll want to do as an incoming student is activate your new UVa computing ID, which will contain your initials and one or two numerals, like mst3k. The process outlined below will automatically set you up with your computing ID, enabling you to:

  • Sign into your email account;
  • Store your files securely online and access Web publishing through the Home Directory Service; and
  • Log into lab computers on Grounds through Eservices.

The Activation Process

There are four steps in the activation process, and you can complete them all online:

  1. Read through the Responsible Computing Handbook and familiarize yourself with the fundamentals.
  2. Demonstrate your understanding of the material by completing the Responsible Computing Quiz with a score of 100%. (There are no trick questions.)
  3. Agree to abide by our responsible computing policies, then obtain and memorize your UVa computing ID and password.
  4. Log in and start computing.

Note: Once you get your new password, don't give it to anyone. If you write it down, keep it in a safe place, and don't keep it with your computing ID.

You may change your password, but if you do, know that changing the password for one account does not automatically change the password for your other accounts.
