Overview
This document will explain how to configure your SecureFX application to make an FTP connection to the MVS service on the mainframe.
Before you use SecureFX or any other FTP program, you must start an active VPN connection as explained in Using the UVa VPN.
If you have already installed and configured SecureFX and just need a reminder of the steps for using the application, jump to “General Instructions for VPN-FTP Usage” below.
SecureFX for File Transfer
- If you haven't installed SecureFX, please follow the instructions in SecureFX for Windows.
- Once SecureFX is downloaded and installed, open the program by clicking Start | All Programs | SecureFX 6.x | SecureFX 6.x. If the Connect window does not appear choose File, then Connect, and a window similar to the one below should appear. (A window may also appear with access to your local files, and you may see a list of servers in the Connect window if you have previously used SecureFX or SecureCRT.)
- In the Connect window that appears, click the New Session button
(see figure below); a New Session Wizard dialog should appear.

- If the Wizard opens, choose FTP from the drop down list next to Protocol: Place a check mark in the box marked “Do not use this wizard when creating sessions” as shown. Then, click OK.
- Now, whether or not the wizard opened, you will see the Session Options window; you need
to perform the following configuration:
- Single-click the Connection item in the Category box to highlight it.
- Type a name in the Name box; this is what will appear on your Connections window later (example uses mercury-vpn as the name).
- Use the pull-down arrow to the right of the Protocol box to choose FTP.
- Do not click OK yet; your screen should look like the image below.
Continue with the next step.

- Click once on the FTP item under the the Connection line in Category; the right side of the screen will change.
- Fill in the Hostname: field with: mercury-vpn.itc.virginia.edu
- The Port: field should be set already to 21, and the Firewall: field to None.
- Leave the Username: field blank.
- Leave the remainder of the screen as is; it should appear similar to the screen below.

- Click OK; the Connection window will reappear, with mercury-vpn listed as an option.
- Start the VPN and connect with the Oracle-Applications-and-or-Mercury profile.
- Double-click on the mercury-vpn connection entry in SecureFX.
- Enter your mainframe user name and password when prompted.
- Once you are connected, a window similar to the following screen will show any data sets that are available
for you to download.

- A similar window with the title Local will also appear, with access to files on your local system. To move files, drag them from one window to the other.
- Once you are finished, close the window to exit.
