Obtaining access to the Unix workstations in E225 Thornton Hall

Use of the Sun workstations in E225 Thornton Hall is restricted to faculty, staff, graduate students, or faculty-sponsored undergraduates at U.Va. These machines are primarily meant to be used for interactive work, either from the computer console itself in the Unix Lab or through remote logins from other machines. Users who want to run programs that are noninteractive (batch) and that need more than a few hours of CPU time should consider other ITC research computing platforms such as the Aspen Linux Cluster or Birch Linux Cluster. The Unix Lab computers can only be accessed from research computing enabled accounts. Please review our Web page about research computing enabled accounts and then complete the form to request a research computing enable account.

Unix Lab Computer Specifications

These Sun workstations are multi-user computers which can be used both interactively and in batch mode from their keyboard and remotely. Therefore they should never be reset, shut off, or powered down by the user at the workstation. If you experience problems or have concerns about any of the workstations in these two facilities, please contact us at the ITC Research Computing Support Center by calling 243-8800 or e-mailing us at Res-Consult@Virginia.EDU

Before using these workstations, you'll want to visit our Unixlab Computing Cluster Usage Web page that lists the Sun machines in the UnixLab cluster as well as the CPU load on the individual machines. Users should log into machines that are not heavily loaded.
