Workshop description: An introductory workshop to SPSS statistical software. Participants learn fundamental SPSS procedures by tackling a actual research question. Areas covered include opening data, variable and value labels, missing data, generating basic descriptive statistics (e.g. means, frequencies), performing basic variable transformations (e.g. recoding existing variables), and performing more advanced statistical procedures. Time permitting, importing from and exporting to other data formats (e.g. Excel or ASCII text files) will also be covered. The course is taught using a windowed interface to SPSS, and thus is most applicable to users using SPSS for Windows and SPSS for Macintosh, and SPSS on Unix through an X-Windows session. Usage of SPSS syntax will not be extensively addressed. The notes from this workshop on SPSS are available on-line at: http://www.itc.virginia.edu/research/spss/training/
This workshop is no longer taught on a regular basis because of lack of interest. You can download the example data files and work through the exercises on your own using the link above or you can come to the ITC Research Computing Support Center (RCSC) in 244 Wilson Hall and work though the workshop notes on one of our computers (we have Windows, Macintosh and several types of Unix workstations) where you can ask questions as you go along.
There's also a good SPSS Tutorial that's available as part of the SPSS program.
If you want an actual class, then there are several logistically arrangements to establish, including needing a guaranteed five or six people who would attend, a mutually-agreeable time and a computer classroom. We can arrange all of this with you, if you have at least five or so people who can take the training together. If this is the case, please contact us at Res-Consult@Virginia.edu or 243-8800.
We highly recommend the self-paced approach. If you want assistance and structure, than contact us and arrange a time to do the training at our Center, where we can help you get started, answer questions as you go along and when you're ready, help you with the analysis of your data.
