SPSS (PASW Statistics 18)

Statistical Package for the Social Sciences

SPSS 18 is now available for Windows and Macintosh Intel machines.

Overview and Restrictions

SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) is a very popular statistical package with an intuitive Graphical User Interface.

SPSS may be licensed by faculty and staff for use on computers in the Charlottesville area. NEITHER GRADUATE NOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS may obtain licenses for SPSS.

SPSS Availability

Faculty and staff at the University of Virginia may access SPSS two ways: in the ITC Labs or on your own machine.

Students (graduate or undergraduate) may only access SPSS in the ITC Labs.

Undergraduate and graduate students are not permitted to install SPSS on personal computers.

Students needing access to SPSS on a department machine must have a faculty or staff member license it on their behalf and take responsibility for meeting the terms of the site license. Questions or concerns regarding student access to SPSS should be directed to ITC Research Computing Support in the Scholars' Lab in Alderman Library or the Research Computing Lab in Brown SEL.

In ITC Computer Labs

In all ITC computer labs, SPSS Version 18.0 is installed on Microsoft Windows machines and Version 18 is installed on Macintosh machines. For a list of all labs and locations, visit the ITC Labs and Classrooms webpage.

On your own computer(s)

Faculty/Staff

If you are faculty or staff of the University and have an office in Charlottesville where you work at least twice a week, you may obtain the site-licensed version of SPSS for home or office use. The site-licensed version may only be used while you are employed by UVa, for UVa-related work.

SPSS Version 18.0 for Windows is available for download by staff and faculty from the licensing database. Questions regarding SPSS can be answered by staff in the Scholars' Lab in Alderman Library or the Research Computing Lab in Brown Library.

SPSS Versions 17.0 and earlier versions: We are no longer issuing updated authorization codes for these versions. If you are currently using one of these earlier versions, it is recommended that you uninstall your current version, and upgrade to SPSS 18 via download from the licensing website, or by obtaining the disk from us at either the Research Computing Lab in Brown SEL or from the Scholars' Lab in Alderman Library.

Students

If you are a graduate or undergraduate student, you may purchase a copy of the Graduate Pack versions of SPSS. The Graduate Pack version is sold only to students, is their copy to keep, and may be taken with them when they leave the University. It is the full, complete version of SPSS and includes the Base, Regression and Advanced Models modules—all of which UVa has site licensed. A Student version is also available for purchase at Cavalier Computers. It is a scaled-back, limited-functionality version of SPSS Base, and it allows for some use of the Regression module. The Student version, for example, does not allow you to save syntax files or to submit syntax directly; pull-down menus must be used. Fewer options are available for some of the statistical procedures.

Other Users

Qualified individuals from the US and Canada can now download a semester rental version of the latest release of SPSS directly from e-academy's website. The rental price is $39.99 US for the base version and $69.99 for the SPSS Grad Pack. Students need a verifiable school e-mail address and a valid Mastercard(R) or Visa(R) in order to purchase retail products from e-academy's secure system. The rental version of SPSS from e-academy has an expiration date of either January 31 or August 31, depending on when you purchase. This means you can purchase a rental version of SPSS for just one semester at a time—the ideal solution if you don't want to invest money in software you're only using for one course. For more information about e-academy or to download and purchase the rental version of SPSS, please visit the e-academy website at: at http://www.e-academy.com/spss or call (877) 616-0662 (toll-free in the U.S. and Canada) or send e-mail to info@e-academy.com

Issues for Mac Users

SPSS 18 for Mac runs on Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard) and Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard). If you are running Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger) you must either upgrade to at least Mac OS 10.5 to use SPSS 18, or request SPSS 13 from Nancy Kechner at the Scholars' Lab. If you are running a Power PC Mac (not Intel) you must use SPSS 13. Again, please contact Nancy Kechner at the Scholars' Lab in Alderman Library.

Modules Available

UVa has the following modules site licensed for Windows:

  • Regression Models
  • Advanced Models
  • SPSS Tables
  • SPSS Trends
