Installation Instructions for S-PLUS 6.1 Standalone Version on Windows

If you will be installing S-PLUS as a user with Administrative privileges, then you can install S-PLUS in a Common Folder accessible by all users of the machine.  Otherwise you will be installing S-PLUS in a Personal Program Folder accessible only by you.

  1. After obtaining the serial number from the licensing database, run setup.exe from the S-PLUS CD if the startup program does not begin automatically.  The following window will appear.  Click on the button to 'Install/Configure S-PLUS on your system.'



  2. Enter your name under 'User Name:', "University of Virginia" under 'Company Name:', and under 'Serial Number:', enter the S-Plus (Personal) 6.1 for Windows serial number obtained from the licensing webpage. Then click on the 'Next >' button.



  3. On the welcome dialog window, click on the 'Next >' button.



  4. Read the Workstation License Agreement and Limited Warranty.  If you agree, then click on the 'Yes' button.



  5. If you are unsure about your Setup Type requirements then select 'Typical' and click on the 'Next >' button.



  6. 'C:\Program Files\Insightful\splus61' is the standard folder location for S-PLUS 6.0.  Unless you need to install SPLUS elsewhere, click on the 'Next >' button.



  7. 'C:\Program Files\Insightful\splus61\users\(your login id)' is the standard folder location for your S-Plus project files  Click on the 'Next >' button if you are satisfied with the default Folder.  Otherwise, 'Browse...' to and set the desired folder location.



  8. If you have administrator priviledges, you are given the option of installing S-Plus for use by you alone or by all users (recommended) of your computer.  Once you have made your selection, click on the 'Next >' button to continue.



  9. This next window allows you to select or name the tab in the 'Programs' tab of the Start menu.  Click on the 'Next >' button to continue.



  10. Select the options to enable when S-Plus starts.  Then click on the 'Next >' button.  If you want to change these selections later on, you can do so from within S-Plus after installation.



  11. You will be given a chance to review the settings you have chosen.  When you click on the 'Next >' button, S-PLUS Setup will begin installing files.



  12. During the installation process, S-Plus will install a number of plug-ins in other applications including in Excel.  If you have macro protection enabled, Excel will prompt you to enable macros.  To do so, check the 'Always trust macros from this source' checkbox, and click on the 'Enable Macros' button.



  13. Click on the 'Next >' button to initialize S-Plus' automation objects.



  14. It is advisable to check for updates to the program online for any recent patches or related information.  The release notes are a good resource for SPLUS help and information, and you may want to bookmark the notes for future reference.  Click on the 'Finish' button.



  15. Read through the Release Notes.



  16. On the Download Center webpage, we are informed, in this case, that the software is up-to-date.
