The minimum recommended system configuration is Pentium II/233 with 96MB of RAM. You must have at least 175MB of free disk space for the typical installation (and, if not installing on Drive C:\, an additional 75MB free disk space on Drive C:\ to unpack the distribution). A complete installation requires 256MB of free disk space.
S-PLUS 6 for Windows uses a completely reengineered implementation of the S language. OBJECTS CREATED WITH S-PLUS 6 CANNOT BE USED WITH EARLIER VERSIONS OF S-PLUS. You should always run S- PLUS 6 in an S-PLUS 6 chapter as described in the detailed installation instructions on the CD; this ensures that your working directory contains only objects created in S-PLUS 6. You can use older objects in S-PLUS 6, but you should access them by attaching directories in a position other than 1 in the search list so that S-PLUS 6 does not accidentally write to them. If S-PLUS 6 does not write to an SV3 _Data directory, it can still be used by S-PLUS 2000 and earlier.
Do NOT install this release over any existing version of S-PLUS. Instead, designate a clean installation directory for S-PLUS 6 and proceed with the Setup program as described below.
Perform the installation as a user with admistrator privileges. Upon inserting the S-PLUS CD, the dialog box below should appear automatically. If it fails to do so, browse with the Windows Explorer to your CD-ROM drive for S6_Net and double-click on setup.exe to begin the installation program. When the dialog box appears choose Step 1: Install S-PLUS 6 for Windows Network Edition Server Files. You will not execute Steps 2 and 3 for your installation nor will you install any modules. You may choose to install Acrobat Reader for the online manuals.

The installation process will begin.

As directed choose Next to begin the installation.

Read and agree to the License Agreement to proceed.

Enter your name, University of Virginia for Company Name, and the serial number obtained for the licensing database. You do not need to register online. Choose Next> to proceed.

Choose Typical installation and proceed.

You will not be configuring clients. Choose Next> to proceed.

Choose the default TCP-IP for type of network.

Set the S_PROJ path.

Chhose Personal or Common for the type of program folder.

Set the program folder.

Set the options that you wish to have enabled or disabled on startup of S-PLUS.

You may receive warnings similar to the one below during the installation of add-ins. It is safe to enable macros.

Choose Next> to install initialize automation objects.

If you leave the two boxes checked, then when installation finishes, your default browser will automatically bring up release notes and check for updates.

After installing the software, you next need to configure your local workstation to communicate with the license manager. For Windows 95/98 machines, you will need to open your AUTOEXEC.BAT file (using a text editor like NotePad) and add the following line (substitute the S_ELMHOST value from the licensing webpage for <value>):
SET S_ELMHOST=<value>
Now, reboot your system.
For Windows NT or Windows 2000 machines, you can modify your environment variables by clicking on Start -- Settings -- Control Panel and double click on the System icon.
For NT 4, select the Environment tab. At the bottom of the window, you will see a Variable and a Value box. Type "S_ELMHOST" in the Variable box and the S_ELMHOST value from the licensing webpage in the Value box. Click "Apply" and then "OK".
For Windows 2000 users, you should see an Advanced tab with an Environment Variables button. Click on it. Under either User or System Variables, click on New. For Variable Name, type "S_ELMHOST" (without the quotes) and for Variable Value, type the S_ELMHOST value from the licensing webpage. Click OK, then click Apply back in the main Environment Variables box, and OK until you exit out of the panel.
The process is illustrated for Windows 2000 in the next three images.

S-PLUS is now ready for use.
