Open a web browser and go to the
ITC licensing webpage.
Log into the site using your UVa identification number and last name.
To get a new license, select the SAS 8.2 for Linux license
from the New License Options section at the bottom of the page.
Download the license file sasinit.sas and save it
to a convenient location on your hard drive (/usr/local).
The SASSETUP cannot be started from the Linux file viewer. The install
is a text install that must be run from a terminal window. If you
attempt to start the install from the file viewer the cdrom will spin
for a few seconds and then stop.
In these instructions, we're assuming that:
-- the installation CD path is /mnt/cdrom
-- SAS is to be installed in /usr/local/SAS_8.2
-- The setinit.sas is in /usr/local
Make sure netscape is in your path, su to root, and cd to /usr/local.
From a shell prompt, run
> /mnt/cdrom/SASSETUP
You will be presented with a dialog in which a number of selections must be made. If you are unsure as to which to choose, here is a sample dialog including most selections which may assist in making your decisions.
Generally, you may choose selections appropriate for your needs, but please note the following exception. You
must choose to deselect SAS/Secure 168-bit. (If you need this option, please
contact us for another CD.) Here is the excerpt from the installation dialog
that shows the choices and manner of deselecting 168-bit (you will enter "-24").

The SAS Online Documentation has not changed between SAS 8.0, 8.1, and 8.2. If you have high speed internet access, we recommend using the documentation located on ITC's SAS 8 Online Documentation URL in order to save disk space. Otherwise, a documentation CD is available by request for local installation. To install the documentation, place the CD-ROM labeled SAS OnlineDoc into your CD-ROM drive. The setup wizard should automatically start. Simply follow the setup process.
The SAS installation process does not create the correct links to the Online Documentation, whether or not your installation is an upgrade, and whether or not your Online Documentation is installed on your hard drive.
To correct this problem,
1. run /urs/local/sassetup as root.
2. Select Option 2 -. Run Setup Utilities from the SAS Setup Primary Menu.
3. Select 3 - Specify SAS OnlineDoc Location
4. To use UVA online documentation enter: http://central.itc.virginia.edu/manuals/sas8/onldoc.htm
5. Quit the Setup Utility
You have now finished installing the SAS System.

Before you contact us for assistance, please be sure you have thoroughly checked through these installation instructions. The majority of calls we receive concerning installation problems are due to missed steps or problems documented in these installation instructions.
When you contact us for assistance, please be prepared to tell the consultant the make and model of your computer, and the versions of Linux and SAS you are running. Describe in detail what steps and commands you gave and messages you got when the problem arose.
Information Communication and Technology provides a two-night, four-hour course on the basic operation and commands of SAS for Windows. Most of this course is applicable to using SAS withing the Linux environment as well. For a schedule of classes, please visit the Courses page of the ITC Research Computing Support group (www.itc.virginia.edu/research/sas/). The notes from this course are available via the web on the ITC SAS help page (www.itc.virginia.edu/research/docs/sas/training/).
The SAS Institute, Inc. offers public training seminars on a regular basis, some of which are held in Washington, DC area. You can also arrange for on-site training. Contact the Training Department of SAS Institute, Inc., for more information at (919) 677-8000.
