Software and Hardware Issues and Requirements

Click here for the complete pdf version of the SAS for Linux system requirements.

Here are some of the essentials:

· SuSE Linux, Release 7.1
· Red Hat Linux 6.2

Both distributions use:
· Linux kernel 2.2.x
· GNU libc 2.1.3

Web Browser:
· Netscape Navigator, v4.08 or Communicator, v4.7 or higher

Utilities for Documentation:
· Ghostview, Ghostscript which are available with most linux distributions
· or, Adobe Acrobat Reader available from Adobe

Memory Requirements:
· 64 MB recommended

Terminals Supported:
· Any X Windows-based terminal or server that supports a minimum of 256 colors

According to SAS, other Linux distributions that include these levels of the kernel and libc may be compatible with SAS software, but they have not been tested, and so they are not supported.

SAS also notes that one limitation of 2.2 series Linux kernels is a lack of support for files larger than 2 GB. However, patches exist to create a 2.2 kernel with Large File Support (LFS). The SAS System will run without LFS enabled; however, when the SAS System is run on a kernel with LFS, it can read and write files larger than 2 GB. For more information, refer to the SAS on Linux and Large File Support page at the following Web site: http://www.sas.com/service/admin/unx/linux/lfs/index.html

At Research Computing Support, we have had successful installations on RedHat 7.2 up-to-date as of November 20 with kernel 2.4.9-13 and Netscape version 4.78, and RedHat 7.1 with kernel 2.4.9-12. We have also had a somewhat problematic installation on Re dHat 7.2 kernel 2.4.9-13 in that the help facility does not work properly.

Consequently, we advise that you use SAS for Linux kernels 2.4.x at your own risk and develop an appropriate Quality Assurance plan to validate your results.

The SAS installation script will require the uncompress utility. If you get errors due to the absence of uncompress, read this SAS Note for a solution.

You will receive an Installation Disk and a Solutions Disk. Before installing, be sure to read the Install Instructions, and System Requirements files available on the Installation Disk. These files are available in both pdf and ps formats in the doc directory on the Installation Disk.
Quick Installation Instructions

Open a web browser and go to the ITC licensing webpage. Log into the site using your UVa identification number and last name.

To get a new license, select the SAS 8.2 for Linux license from the New License Options section at the bottom of the page.

Download the license file sasinit.sas and save it to a convenient location on your hard drive (/usr/local).

The SASSETUP cannot be started from the Linux file viewer. The install is a text install that must be run from a terminal window. If you attempt to start the install from the file viewer the cdrom will spin for a few seconds and then stop.

In these instructions, we're assuming that:

-- the installation CD path is /mnt/cdrom
-- SAS is to be installed in /usr/local/SAS_8.2
-- The setinit.sas is in /usr/local

Make sure netscape is in your path, su to root, and cd to /usr/local. From a shell prompt, run

> /mnt/cdrom/SASSETUP

You will be presented with a dialog in which a number of selections must be made. If you are unsure as to which to choose, here is a sample dialog including most selections which may assist in making your decisions. Generally, you may choose selections appropriate for your needs, but please note the following exception. You must choose to deselect SAS/Secure 168-bit. (If you need this option, please contact us for another CD.) Here is the excerpt from the installation dialog that shows the choices and manner of deselecting 168-bit (you will enter "-24").

If you are short on hard drive space there are a number of other items which can be deselected if you will not need them. If selected, the OnlineTutor is installed locally on your machine. The OnlineTutor and the online documentation are two different things. You can install the online documentation locally after your SAS installation or you can make use of ITC's online documentation at http://central.itc.virginia.edu/manuals/sas8/onldoc.htm
Online Documentation
  1. The SAS Online Documentation has not changed between SAS 8.0, 8.1, and 8.2. If you have high speed internet access, we recommend using the documentation located on ITC's SAS 8 Online Documentation URL in order to save disk space. Otherwise, a documentation CD is available by request for local installation. To install the documentation, place the CD-ROM labeled SAS OnlineDoc into your CD-ROM drive. The setup wizard should automatically start. Simply follow the setup process.

The SAS installation process does not create the correct links to the Online Documentation, whether or not your installation is an upgrade, and whether or not your Online Documentation is installed on your hard drive.

  2. To correct this problem,

    1. run /urs/local/sassetup as root.
    2. Select Option 2 -. Run Setup Utilities from the SAS Setup Primary Menu.
    3. Select 3 - Specify SAS OnlineDoc Location
    4. To use UVA online documentation enter: http://central.itc.virginia.edu/manuals/sas8/onldoc.htm
    5. Quit the Setup Utility

You have now finished installing the SAS System.

If you need further assistance with installing SAS, contact an ITC statistical computing consultant. The consultants are located at the ITC Research Computing Support Center in Wilson Hall 244 and can be contacted by telephone at 243-8800 or by electronic mail to res-consult@virginia.edu.

When Things Don't Work

Users with problems using SAS should first check the SAS help page maintained by the ITC Research Computing Support group (www.itc.virginia.edu/research/sas/). This page has numerous resources such as training tutorials, FAQs, and helpful links related to SAS.

Under the terms of the Micro Software License Agreement that the University and Information Communication and Technology signed to acquire SAS for Linux, as well as the End User License Agreement you signed to obtain a copy of the software, you should direct all your questions concerning installation and use to a statistical computing consultant with Information Communication and Technology. The consultants are located at the ITC Research Computing Support Center in Wilson Hall 244 and can be contacted by telephone at 243-8800 or by electronic mail to res-consult@virginia.edu. You can also drop by the ITC Research Computing Support Center during posted statistical consulting hours to discuss your problem or you can contact a consultant about setting up an appointment. For posted hours, please visit the statistical computing consulting page of the ITC Research Computing Support group (www.itc.virginia.edu/researchers/services.html).

Before you contact us for assistance, please be sure you have thoroughly checked through these installation instructions. The majority of calls we receive concerning installation problems are due to missed steps or problems documented in these installation instructions.

When you contact us for assistance, please be prepared to tell the consultant the make and model of your computer, and the versions of Linux and SAS you are running. Describe in detail what steps and commands you gave and messages you got when the problem arose.

Training

Information Communication and Technology provides a two-night, four-hour course on the basic operation and commands of SAS for Windows. Most of this course is applicable to using SAS withing the Linux environment as well. For a schedule of classes, please visit the Courses page of the ITC Research Computing Support group (www.itc.virginia.edu/research/sas/). The notes from this course are available via the web on the ITC SAS help page (www.itc.virginia.edu/research/docs/sas/training/).

The SAS Institute, Inc. offers public training seminars on a regular basis, some of which are held in Washington, DC area. You can also arrange for on-site training. Contact the Training Department of SAS Institute, Inc., for more information at (919) 677-8000.

Manuals

The SAS Institute publishes several manuals on SAS and Getting Started guides. Some of these SAS manuals are available at the University Bookstore. Many of these manuals are also available for temporary loan from the ITC statistical computing consultants. The consultants are located at the ITC Research Computing Support Center in Wilson Hall 244 and can be contacted by telephone at 243-8800 or by electronic mail to res-consult@virginia.edu.

Many SAS publications are available directly from SAS Institute via their Publications website (www.sas.com/service/doc/intro.html).

In addition, SAS now has many of its manuals on-line on the CD you have purchased. From within SAS, you can access this documentation by selecting On-line Documentation from the Help menu.
