Research Computing Support Talks in October & November

All talks are in Wilson Hall, room 244. Please email res-consult@virginia.edu if you need further details. The notes from previous brown bag talks are available on ITCWeb at
http://www.itc.virginia.edu/research/talks

  • October 23: Database Driven Web Pages at 3:00 PM
Do you ever wish survey respondents could enter information themselves, or wish you could enter or access data remotely? With the explosion of information comes the difficulty of entering, accessing, and managing the data. Databases are one of the best tools for doing this job. The Web, in turn, has become a pre-eminent utility for information dissemination and ubiquitous access. This talk will provide an introduction and overview of two database programs (Microsoft Access and MySQL) and how to use the Web to interface with them. Topics will include SQL, HTML, ASP, CGI, scripting languages and environments (Perl, PHP, JavaScript, Basic), and Security, and resources for all of these topics.

  • November 20: Introduction to Maple 8 at 3:00 PM
This talk will provide an introduction and overview of Maple 8. Maple is technical software system for doing symbolic and numeric computation. It has both a text-based and graphical user interface, an extensible programming language, and sophisticated 2-D and 3-D plotting utilities. It also has word processing capabilities, export to HTML and Latex, and connectivity to Excel, Matlab, and external C-callable libraries.

Reminder: SAS for the PC & Mac Licenses Expire October 15

If you are running SAS on your PC or Mac, please be advised that it will expire on Tuesday, October 15, if you have not updated your license file with help from the Research Computing Support Center. The U.Va. site license for SAS for many platforms has been renewed, tested and updated.

Email reminders have been sent out to all currently registered SAS for Windows, Macintosh, or Linux users at the University notifying them of the availability of the new 2002-2003 SETINIT license codes for their SAS software. Current SAS users who did not receive this notice or have misplaced it should contact the Research Computing Support Group either by visiting Wilson Hall, Room 244 between 9am and 5pm, Monday through Friday, by phoning 243-8800 or by sending email to res-consult@Virginia.EDU.

BusinessMAP 3.0 Available

BusinessMAP 3.0 is a new mapping application from ESRI that transforms information from databases, contact managers, spreadsheets, and electronic phone books to pushpin and color-filled maps.

It will turn static data into meaningful images to help understand your business better and help with sales automation and mission-critical decision making processes.

Unlike street mapping programs, BusinessMAP 3.0 is designed for those who want to visualize unique business information by converting records from spreadsheets, contact managers, databases, and phone directories to symbols on a map. BusinessMAP 3.0 not only plots points on maps but also allows you to perform color-code analysis, geographic searches, territory design, and much more.

BusinessMAP 3.0 not only reads data from a number of programs but also integrates with popular contact managers such as ACT!, GoldMine, Outlook, Excel, and Maximizer. This integration capability enables you to launch BusinessMAP 3.0 from within your application.

For more information on BusinessMAP 3.0 at U.Va., visit http://www.itc.virginia.edu/research/esri/bmap.html.
