James River Technical & SGI Seminar on October 9

On Tuesday, October 9, 2001, James River Technical, SGI's largest educational partner, and SGI, in a continuing effort to support one of their biggest university customers, is bringing a valuable technical seminar to Charlottesville.

What: Technical overview - new SGI servers and workstations and Varsity Support Program Update
When: Tuesday, October 9, 2001 from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm - Registration: 11:45 am
Where: Newcomb Hall, Commonwealth Room 388
Lunch will be provided.

We will also address any questions that you may have concerning other SGI products, solutions and support.

Fall Brownbag Talk Series at the Research Computing Support Center

Join the members of the ITC Research Computing Support Group for the remainder of our Fall 2001 Brownbag Series. Each brownbag is held at 12 noon at the Research Computing Support Center (244 Wilson Hall), usually on the third Wednesday of the month. Bring your lunch, we'll supply the drinks, snacks and cookies.

Software Changes in ITC Labs and Classrooms

The following changes to the research computing software became effective in all ITC Labs at the beginning of the Fall semester:

Changes in the PC environment:

   SAS 8.1 was upgraded to SAS 8.2.
   Maple 6 was upgraded to Maple 7.
   Mathematica 4.0 was upgraded to Mathematica 4.1.
   Matlab 6.0 was upgraded to Matlab 6.1. 
   ArcInfo 8.02 has been added, and ArcView GIS v3.2 has been retained.

Changes in the Mac environment:

   Maple 6 was upgraded to Maple 7.
   Mathematica 4.0 was upgraded to Mathematica 4.1.
   SPSS 6.1 was upgraded to SPSS 10.0.

Other PC upgrades planned for January 2001 are:

   Stata 6.0 will be upgraded to Stata 7.0.
   Splus 2000 will be upgraded to Splus 6 release 2.
   Lisrel 8.3 will be upgraded to Lisrel 8.5.

SAS and SPSS Workshops in October

We will be giving introductory workshops on the SAS and SPSS statistical packages. Pre-registration is required, but there is NO fee for taking the workshop. There is, however, a "no-show" fee charged for enrolling but not showing up and not cancelling your registration in advance.
