ArcView 8.3 and ArcInfo 8.3 Are Now Available

ESRI has released ArcView 8.3 and ArcInfo 8.3, and CDs for these products are now available for eligible users at the Research Computing Support Center in Wilson Hall, Room 244.

To review What's New with the 8.3 release of the ArcView and ArcInfo levels along with new ArcGIS extensions, you may visit the website at http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/arcgis_83.html.

Availability information and installation instructions for ESRI products at U.Va. are online at http://www.itc.virginia.edu/research/esri/home.html.

While license eligibility remains the same for faculty and staff, student users of ArcView who have current licenses have been sent individual e-mail notification that they must remove ARCVIEW from any personally-owned PCs by May 30, 2003. Due to changes in our licensing agreement with ESRI, we are no longer permitted to distribute ArcView to students for off-Grounds use, and we are required to have all existing installations removed to comply with our site license.

Students remaining at the University who anticipate an ongoing need for ArcView, may obtain the license managed ArcInfo product from the Research Computing Support Center. ArcInfo is an ESRI product that includes all capabilities of ArcView. You can learn more about ArcInfo at http://www.itc.virginia.edu/research/esri/arcinfo83.html.

The licensing conditions for ArcView and ArcInfo at U.Va. are outlined under Availability at their respective Web pages:

http://www.itc.virginia.edu/research/esri/arcinfo83.html
http://www.itc.virginia.edu/research/esri/arcview83.html
Also, note that both ArcView and ArcInfo require the Windows NT, Windows 2000 or Windows XP operating system.

Please direct questions on ArcInfo or ArcView by sending e-mail to res-consult@Virginia.EDU or by calling the ITC Research Computing Support Center (RCSC) at 243-8800.

Recommended Reading: Accelerating Matlab Code Performance

An article entitled "Picking up the Pace with the MATLAB Profiler" appeared in the most recent issue of Matlab News & Notes at www.mathworks.com/company/newsletter/may03/profiler.shtml.

A new feature of Matlab 6.5 is the MATLAB JIT-Accelerator, which can significantly accelerate your code by transforming high-level MATLAB commands into native machine instructions. The article describes how to use the Matlab Profiler to take advantage of the JIT-Accelerator.

A hard copy version of the latest Matlab News & Notes is available for perusal at the Research Computing Support Center in Wilson Hall 244. Questions about optimizing Matlab code performance can be sent to res-consult@virginia.edu.

Maintaining Your SAS Installation

SAS Institute provides hot fixes to remedy SAS defects or bugs. Most of the fixes address common or critical bugs, but many SAS problems that are less widespread or less critical are now actively addressed by means of the hot fix process.

SAS hot fix bundles are an accumulation of related hot fixes that are delivered in one installable unit. These bundles are available by platform.

ITC encourages SAS users to maintain their installations by applying SAS hot fixes. Visit the links at http://www.itc.virginia.edu/research/sas/ to learn more about the hot fixes as well as the related alerts published by SAS.

As of May 2003, for Version 8.2 of SAS the Base Bundle and the STAT Bundle should be installed at a minimum. On the Windows platform these bundles are self-extracting files and very easy to apply.

You will need to download the two bundles, Base Bundle 82BX05 and STAT Bundle 82SX01.

1. Base Bundle 82BX05:
http://ftp.sas.com/techsup/download/hotfix/82_win_sbcs_base_intbundle.html

2. STAT Bundle: 82SX01:
http://ftp.sas.com/techsup/download/hotfix/v82sx.html

Long-term SAS users please note: The tslevel is not incremented when a bundle is applied. The current release is 8.2 TS2M0 for Windows. Instead of modifying the tslevel, an audit file is installed with every hot fix. This text file contains hot fix specific information such as the hot fix name, product involved, files included in the hot fix, port date, SAS Note numbers and comments. Audit files have the same name as the hot fix (i.e., 82ba01wn.aud) and are installed in a location specific to each host. For example, on Windows systems the audit files are installed in !SASROOT\core\sasinst\hotfix.

Maple 8 Fix for Redhat 9.0 Users

Users of Maple 8 on Linux who try to start Maple under Redhat 9 may see messages similar to these:

> /usr/local/maple/bin.IBM_INTEL_LINUX/mserver: relocation error:
> /usr/local/maple/bin.IBM_INTEL_LINUX/libmaple.so: symbol errno,
> version GLIBC_2.0 not defined in file libc.so.6 with link time
> reference
These problems will be observed with glibc versions 2.3.1-x and higher.

Solution
The solution is to use one of the following commands to run maple or xmaple:
        LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.1 maple

Equivalently, in bash users may try:
        export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.1; maple

In tcsh this works:
        setenv LD_ASSUME_KERNEL 2.4.1; maple

The environment variable LD_ASSUME_KERNEL may be set in the script resource file if desired.

If you continue to get error messages or have other questions or problems, please contact Research Computing Support via e-mail at res-consult@virginia.edu or by phone at 243-8800.
