Need a SPSS or S-PLUS Workshop?

The Research Computing Support Center can teach introductory workshops on SAS, SPSS, and S-PLUS statistical packages, as well as any of the other research software supported by ITC. The scheduled workshops for these three statistical packages have already occurred for this spring semester. However, we are available to teach the workshop, or some component of it, if there are several people interested in taking the workshop. We can tailor it to your group's specific needs. For example, if you are an instructor, we could tailor an introductory workshop to your class's needs; please e-mail res-consult@virginia.edu, or call the Research Computing Support Center at 243-8800 for more information.

Insightful Corporation, home of the statistical software package S-PLUS, also offers training courses for users of S-PLUS from the beginner to the seasoned professional. Seats are available for several S-PLUS courses being presented in 2003. You can view the details of all upcoming courses on the Insightful Website at http://www.insightful.com/services/schedule.asp.

Sendmail Security Update Information

Due to the recent announcement of a security hole in Sendmail, ITC has updated the ITC Sendmail support pages at
http://www.virginia.edu/abuse/sendmail/

This page covers Sendmail for Aix 4.3, Irix 6.5, and Solaris 2.6 and 8.

Linux information can be found at
https://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2003-073.html

We are currently working on updating all ITC-maintained machines.

Non-ITC-maintained machines are their owner's responsibilty.

This security hole is significant enough that all machines need to be patched, without exception. Even machines not currently running Sendmail, but that have an unpatched binary installed are vulnerable to local compromise.

Maple Web Demonstrations in March and April

ITC manages the site license for the Maple system, an advanced, mathematical problem solving and programming environment. In addition to the research computing application Maple, Waterloo offers several products of interest to post-secondary educators and information management professionals.

Waterloo Maple is now soliciting participation in testing of Maple T.A., a Web-based assessment and teaching software product in the pilot stage. Maple T.A. offers a Web-based system for creating tests, assignments, and exercises, automatically assessing student responses and performance. Maple T.A. can be used in the classroom and as part of complex distance-education initiatives. Unlike traditional assessment systems, Maple T.A. supports complex, freeform entry and intelligent evaluation of responses, making this system ideal for mathematics, science, or any course that requires mathematics. If your department has interest in participating in a pilot study, please contact Maple directly at bizdev@maplesoft.com.

Waterloo Maple will conduct free Web demonstrations of Maple T.A., their upcoming product for creating online Maple-graded exams and assignments. All you need to participate is a Web browser and a telephone. Seminars on Maplets Programming and Maple in Mathematics Education will also be hosted throughout the Spring.
