SAS OnLineDoc Available Within U.Va. Domain Only

The SAS "OnLineDoc", which is all SAS documentation, has been restricted to network addresses within the ".virginia.edu" domain only. SAS Institute requested it be moved from unrestricted to restricted access in order to comply with our software license terms and conditions. We are still working with them to determine acceptable access. If you need to use SAS OnLine documentation from off-grounds, please stop by and pick up the SAS OnLineDoc CD. It has all the same information as the website and can be read and accessed from the CD. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and are working to make it available off-grounds to U.Va. SAS users.

ArcView and ArcInfo 8.2 are Available

ArcView 8.2 CD's are available at the Research Computing Support Center. ArcView 8.2 offers the following key enhancements and data updates.

ArcInfo 8.2 is also available now for those who require advanced geoprocessing and data conversion capability in addition to all the functionality of ArcView and ArcEditor. ArcInfo is the complete GIS data creation, update, query, mapping, and analysis system. ArcInfo is composed of two parts - ArcInfo Desktop and ArcInfo Workstation.

ArcInfo Desktop includes all the functionality of ArcEditor and adds a set of data management, analysis, and conversion tools to the ArcToolbox application. With these tools, you can perform data conversion, generalization, aggregation, overlays, buffer creation, statistical calculations, and much more. Each of these tools has a menu-driven interface with wizards where appropriate. ArcInfo Desktop operates on Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

The ArcInfo Workstation portion of ArcInfo 8.2 provides geoprocessing via the classic user interface (ARC, ARCEDIT, ARCPLOT, ARC Macro Language [AML], and more). In addition to providing the user environment familiar to many ArcInfo users and found in countless existing GIS applications, ArcInfo Workstation includes fundamental geoprocessing functionality. ArcInfo Workstation operates on Windows NT, Windows 2000, Sun Solaris, IBM RS/6000, and SGI platforms.

The following two ArcInfo Workstation extensions are included in the corresponding ArcGIS extensions.

ArcGrid - ArcGIS Spatial Analyst. ArcGrid is a raster geoprocessing toolbox that is integrated with ArcInfo. ArcGrid is used to help solve real-world problems in land use planning, market research, site suitability analysis, corridor and path analysis, and dispersion and hydrologic modeling. ArcGrid is now included with ArcGIS Spatial Analyst.

ArcTIN - ArcGIS 3D Analyst. ArcTIN is used to create, store, analyze, and display surface information. ArcTIN is used for 3D display of surfaces, volumetric and cut-fill analysis, assessment of visual quality, generations of engineering contours, and analysis of groundwater aquifers. ArcTIN is now included with ArcGIS 3D Analyst.

ArcPad 6.0 is Available

At version 6, ArcPad extends global positioning system (GPS) support, includes enhancements to key functions such as editing, query, navigation, and map display, and supports internationalization and localization. ArcPad 6.0 supports Windows CE 2.11, 2.12, 3.0 and Pocket PC 2002. It also runs on Windows 95/98/NT/2000 and XP platforms.

Also available is the ArcPad Application Builder which includes the desktop customization application ArcPad Studio. With ArcPad Studio users can create new toolbars that contain built-in and custom tools; design custom forms to streamline data collection in the field; build applets for specific purposes; and write scripts that interact with ArcPad's internal objects.

ArcPad and the ArcPad Application Builder can be downloaded from the licensing database at https://www.web.virginia.edu/rescomp/ldb/login.asp

FEMLAB Trial Licenses Available

FEMLAB is a modeling and simulation software for scientific and engineering problems based on partial differential equations. It runs on top of MATLAB and allows collaboration between FEMLAB models and the MATLAB toolboxes (such as Simulink), while FEMLAB code can also be directly manipulated from this environment.

Detailed information about FEMLAB can be found on the website http://www.femlab.com. FEMLAB has a suite of solvers that are able to solve arbitrarily specified systems of nonlinear PDEs, which can also be freely coupled to other systems. Besides it's use in solving general multiphysics problems, FEMLAB provides specialized modules in the following applications areas: Chemical Engineering and transport phenomena Electromagnetics Structural Mechanics.

FEMLAB is now available on CDs for trial installations on the Windows, Macintosh and Unix/Linux platforms from the ITC Research Computing Support Center (RCSC) in Wilson Hall 244. Researchers interested in testing out the capabilities of this software can checkout a CD and installation instructions from the RCSC and then obtain a 30-day trial license by contacting Brett Handerson, the FEMLAB sales coordinator, at 781-273-3322.

Note that MATLAB (which the RCSC distributes) must be installed or mounted to the machine on which FEMLAB is to be installed. Information on MATLAB can be found on the website http://www.itc.Virginia.EDU/research/matlab.html.

ITC Announcement/ITC SGI Upgrades [Starting 6/17/02]

Beginning June 17th, ITC will begin upgrading its SGI computers to IRIX 6.5.16. Initially, the first machines to get upgraded will be the three Origin 200s (o200-1.sp2.Virginia.EDU, o200-2.sp2.Virginia.EDU and o200-3.sp2.Virginia.EDU).

Currently, we plan on upgrading one machine per day; however, if time permits, we will try and do more than one machine per day.
During the upgrade the machine will not be available and any running jobs will be terminated at that time. After the upgrade of the Origin 200s is complete, ITC will upgrade the ten SGI O2 computers (sgi-1 to sgi-10) in the Albert H. Small Computer lab. The tentative schedule for this upgrade is the week of June 24th. These will also be done one at a time and will not be available during the upgrade process. Any jobs running prior to the upgrade will be terminated.
