This is the February 2003 newsletter of the ITC Research Computing Support Group. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the information presented here, please contact the ITC Research Computing Support Group via e-mail to res-consult@virginia.edu, or at the Research Computing Support Center (RCSC), 244 Wilson Hall, 243-8800. The RCSC is open 9 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday.
The Research Computing Support Center can teach introductory workshops on
SAS, SPSS, and S-PLUS statistical packages, as well as any of the other research
software supported by ITC. The scheduled workshops for these three statistical
packages have already occurred for this spring semester. However, we are available
to teach the workshop, or some component of it, if there are several people
interested in taking the workshop. We can tailor it to your group's specific
needs. For example, if you are an instructor, we could tailor an introductory
workshop to your class's needs. Please e-mail res-consult@virginia.edu or call
the Research Computing Support Center at 243-8800. If you are an instructor
and would like an introductory workshop tailored to your class's needs on any
of our fully-supported packages (e.g., SAS, Matlab, Maple) please e-mail res-consult@virginia.edu,
or call the Research Computing Support Center at 243-8800.
The Research Computing Support Center will be hosting a series of colloquia
as the new year starts. All talks will be from 3:30pm to 4:45pm in the Research
Computing Support Center, Wilson Hall, Room 244. Please join us for:

In January 2003, ITC announced a major upgrade of the SecureCRT software from
version 3.4.6 to version 4.0.2. SecureCRT is a telnet program from Van Dyke
Technologies that provides data encryption and secure login capabilities. We
encouraged users of versions prior to 3.4.6 to upgrade their SecureCRT installations
to close known security holes. (Please see the announcement at http://www.itc.virginia.edu/pubs/announcements/items/itc-securecrt4.html
for more details about the features of version 4.0.2.)
Version 4.0.3 is now available and it fixes a bug in the client program that
did not scrub user names, passwords, and pass phrases in memory after their
use.
To find out more about SecureCRT, please visit ITC's SecureCRT information
site at http://www.itc.virginia.edu/desktop/securecrt/.

Research Computing Spring Colloquia
The notes from these colloquia as well as previous ones are available on ITCWeb
at www.itc.virginia.edu/research/talks/
SPSS has recently released two new versions, 11.5 for Windows and 11.0 for
Mac OS-X. We haven't received the software yet for distribution, but should

and procedures of these new versions. Cancelled - we didn't receive the
software yet.
This talk will provide an overview on using the TotalView debugger for either
serial or parallel programs written in C, C++, or Fortran (77 and 90). Further
information about the TotalView Debugger can be found on the Web page at http://www.itc.virginia.edu/research/totalview.
SAS 9.1 is coming sometime in the first half of 2003. This talk will provide
an overview of new features in SAS with special attention to the Output Delivery
System (ODS).
