Need a SPSS or S-PLUS Workshop?

The Research Computing Support Center can teach introductory workshops on SAS, SPSS, and S-PLUS statistical packages, as well as any of the other research software supported by ITC. The scheduled workshops for these three statistical packages have already occurred for this spring semester. However, we are available to teach the workshop, or some component of it, if there are several people interested in taking the workshop. We can tailor it to your group's specific needs. For example, if you are an instructor, we could tailor an introductory workshop to your class's needs; please e-mail res-consult@virginia.edu, or call the Research Computing Support Center at 243-8800 for more information.

Insightful Corporation, home of the statistical software package S-PLUS, also offers training courses for users of S-PLUS from the beginner to the seasoned professional. Seats are available for several S-PLUS courses being presented in 2003. You can view the details of all upcoming courses on the Insightful Website at http://www.insightful.com/services/schedule.asp.

Overview of RSI Watsyn for Medical Imaging Applications on April 23

Please plan to join us for a presentation on Watsyn on Wednesday, April 23, at 11:00 AM at the ITC Research Computing Support Center, 244 Wilson Hall. Food and drink will be provided.

Watsyn is the first fully integrated implementation platform for medical application development and deployment targeted at the mainstream medical industry. Watsyn is a product of Research Systems, Inc., makers of IDL (Interactive Data Language) software site-licensed at U.Va.

Fashioned after the "drag-n-drop" development paradigm pioneered by Visual Basic, Watsyn software allows you to quickly assemble sophisticated image-centric medical applications. Integrated DICOM and a rapid-application-development environment promote productivity while the support of COM and workflow management ensures application interoperability.

With the palette of pre-built modules, a clinical user can graphically assemble and configure applications tailored to specific needs. The palette of modules supports a variety of modality types and addresses the needs of most medical specialties, including PACS, NM, PET, 3D, radiation oncology and surgical planning. With these modules, one can create a virtually unlimited variety of modality, organ or disease specific applications across a range of uses including research, screening, diagnosis, staging and treatment. Additional information is available at http://watsyn.com/watsyn/.

Maple Web Demonstrations Continue in April

ITC manages the site license for the Maple system, an advanced, mathematical problem solving and programming environment. In addition to the research computing application Maple, Waterloo offers several products of interest to post-secondary educators and information management professionals.

Waterloo Maple is now soliciting participation in testing of Maple T.A., a Web-based assessment and teaching software product in the pilot stage. Maple T.A. offers a Web-based system for creating tests, assignments, and exercises, automatically assessing student responses and performance. Maple T.A. can be used in the classroom and as part of complex distance-education initiatives. Unlike traditional assessment systems, Maple T.A. supports complex, freeform entry and intelligent evaluation of responses, making this system ideal for mathematics, science, or any course that requires mathematics. If your department has interest in participating in a pilot study, please contact Maple directly at bizdev@maplesoft.com.

Waterloo Maple will conduct free Web demonstrations of Maple T.A., their upcoming product for creating online Maple-graded exams and assignments. All you need to participate is a Web browser and a telephone. Seminars on Maplets Programming and Maple in Mathematics Education will also be hosted throughout the Spring.

To view the current schedule and to register for a session, visit the Website at https://maplesoft.webex.com/.

If you are new to Web seminars and would rather attend a session conducted by Research Computing, please contact us. The schedule is as follows:

  • Thursday, April 10, 2003 at 1:00 pm
Maplets Programming with Karen Ranger (45 minutes)

Mailman List Manager Now Available

ITC is pleased to announce the availability of Mailman, a new web-based interface for making and managing email lists. Whether you need to create a mailing list for a U.Va. committee, a project, a department, or a chartered student organization, Mailman can help you set it up in no time! If you are already using a mail list set up under the old Majordomo system, you can quickly convert it to a Mailman list and use the new interface to manage it. Beginning August 1, 2003 all new lists will be created as Mailman lists. Until that time, Mailman is recommended for list management, and any new lists created will be Mailman lists unless Majordomo is specifically requested. Majordomo service will be retired on January 1, 2004.

Using Mailman, you can easily

  • create a new mail list and set up a welcome message for new members
  • transfer ownership of a list
  • add and remove list members
  • specify moderation and privacy settings

and more! To find out more about Mailman, including how to request a new list, please visit http://www.itc.virginia.edu/desktop/email/mailing-lists/mailman.html.
