ITCWeb: IDL IDL Upgrade to Version 6.3

ITC has upgraded the data analysis/visualization software IDL to version 6.3 on the server jeeves.itc for the supported Unix platforms (RS/6000, Sun, SGI, and Linux). IDL 6.3 is the default version invoked with the command /uva/bin/idl and IDL 6.2 will be invoked as /uva/bin/idl_old. IDL 6.3 for the Windows (98/NT/2000/XP) and Macintosh (OS X) platforms is available on CDROM from the Research Computing Support Center in Wilson Hall room 244, or the software can be downloaded from the Licensing Database.

Highlights of IDL 6.3 include:

A detailed description of the new features of the current version can be found on the Web page:
http://www.ittvis.com/idl/whatsnew.asp

PDF versions of the manuals are not installed by default. The user must manually copy them to the appropriate directory. ITT Vis recommends that users copy the PDF files from the directory info/docs on the IDL CD-ROM to the help/pdf subdirectory of your IDL installation. (The pdf directory does not exist by default; the user must create it.) Read the README file in the info/docs directory for important information. If you want the PDF manuals be sure to copy them before you return the CD to the Research Computing Support Center.

Users who have an older version installed locally on their computer and who do not with to upgrade may have to download the new license.dat file from the licensing database as described on the Webpage:
http://www.itc.virginia.edu/research/idl/#Windows

Further information on how to access IDL from either a Unix workstation or a PC, as well as help using IDL, can be found on the Research Computing Services Web page at:
http://www.itc.virginia.edu/research/idl

Specific questions about the upgrade as well general questions concerning as the use of IDL should be directed to res-consult@virginia.edu.
