Licensing

A license file is required to use ArcGIS Schematics.  Please read the overview and follow the instructions below to obtain and install your Schematics license file.

Overview:  ArcGIS Schematics (Single Use) and (Concurrent Use) differs from and ArcGIS (Single Use) and (Concurrent) Use products

The ArcGIS Schematics Extension is available for both the Single Use (one machine) or Concurrent Use (floating, network) environments.  The ArcGIS Schematics Single Use and Concurrent Use extension products work differently than the ArcGIS Single Use and Concurrent Use products.  With the ArcGIS extensions (3D Analyst, Spatial Analyst etc.), the Single Use extensions can only be used with ArcGIS Single Use. The ArcGIS Concurrent Use extensions only work with ArcGIS Concurrent Use.  With ArcGIS Schematics, the ArcGIS Schematics Single Use extension can be used with either ArcGIS Single Use or Concurrent Use.  The ArcGIS Schematics Concurrent Use extension can also be used with either ArcGIS Single Use or Concurrent Use.

IMPORTANT

The licensing for ArcGIS Schematics works differently than the other ArcGIS products.  Do not modify your ArcGIS license file to include any features of ArcGIS Schematics.  Do not copy and paste text into the DOS Window.

Since UVA's license manager for general ESRI products is hosted on a Unix machine and a Unix machine cannot host the license manager for the Schematics Extension, Research Computing supports installation of Schematics within the Single Use environment. Please note that this installation works with the license managed ArcInfo installation.

1)       Obtain your ArcGIS Schematics license file(s) from Research Computing. In order to complete the license request form you will need to provide the Disk Serial Number of your computer or license server’s C: drive. To obtain this number:

a)       Insert the ArcGIS Schematics CD into your CD drive.

b)       Open a DOS Window by clicking Start > Run and type:

cmd <enter>

c)       In the DOS Window type:

<CD Drive>:\License\lmutil lmhostid -vsn <enter>

The second line returned will read similar to:

The FLEXlm host ID of this machine is "DISK_SERIAL_NUM=123ab456

NOTE:  The number may be a combination of numbers and letters.  Retain this number for use when requesting your license file.

2)       To request a license file:

Unlike the directions on the CD, you will send your DISK_SERIAL_NUM to res-consult@Virginia.EDU and request the license.   Based on previous experience it will take approximately one working day to obtain this particular license.  Once you have received your license by email from Research Computing, you may resume with these instructions.

1)       Create a SchematicsLM folder on the computer where ArcGIS Schematics is installed (for Single Use) or on the license server machine (for Concurrent Use).

NOTE:  The license file must be copied to a Windows machine; it cannot reside on a UNIX machine.

C:\SchematicsLM <enter>

2)       Copy the license file onto your computer or License Server machine

The license file will be sent to you via e-mail. You will be instructed to save this file to the folder created in Step 3 (C:\SchematicsLM).

NOTE:  Please confirm the license file(s) has a “.lic” extension. Do not open this file.  Opening the file to view its contents may result in the addition of a “.txt” or other extension to the file name. This will result in licensing errors.

Once you have received your license and saved it to the C:\SchematicsLM folder, proceed with the remaining steps below depending on the type of license (Single Use or Concurrent Use) that you have purchased.

Single Use Users

The first time ArcGIS Schematics or ArcGIS Schematics Designer is initialized you will be prompted to browse to a License Server or License File. Choose to browse for a License File and navigate to the C:\SchematicsLM folder. If the license file(s) is not moved or deleted from the folder, you will not have to browse for this file again when using ArcGIS Schematics or ArcGIS Schematics Designer.

Concurrent Use Users

1)       The Schematics License Manager must be installed in order to administer your Concurrent Use license(s). Insert the Schematics installation CD in the CD drive and follow these instructions to install the Schematics License Manager:

a)       Copy the contents of <CD Drive>:\License into C:\SchematicsLM

b)       Open a DOS Window, Start > Run > type:

cmd <enter>

c)       Change directories to C:\SchematicsLM, type:

cd C:\SchematicsLM <enter>

d)       Type the following command:

installs –n “Schematics License Manager” –c C:\SchematicsLM –e {continued} C:\SchematicsLM\lmgrd.exe <enter>

2)    Start the Schematics license service:

  • At the C:\SchematicsLM command prompt type the following:

net start "Schematics License Manager" <enter>

The following lines should appear in the DOS window:

The Schematics License Manager service is starting.”

“The Schematics License Manager service was started successfully.”

All the elements needed to administer the ArcGIS Schematics Concurrent licenses are now in place and you are ready to use the software. The first time ArcGIS Schematics or an ArcGIS Schematics Designer session is initialized you will be prompted to browse to a License Server or License File. Either option can be chosen: if you opt to look for a Server simply type in the name of the license server machine (no additional characters, such as the “@” sign, are needed); if you choose to browse for a License File navigate to the C:\SchematicsLM folder. If the license file(s) is not moved or deleted from the folder, you should not have to browse for this file again when using ArcGIS Schematics or ArcGIS Schematics Designer.

Known Issues

·         If ArcGIS Schematics 2.2.3 is installed over an existing ArcGIS Schematics 2.2.2 install (without first uninstalling ArcGIS Schematics 2.2.2 in Add/Remove Programs), the upgrade may remove two required font files (Arialuni.ttf and gilc___.ttf ).

§         On Windows 2000 or Windows XP, this may cause the MSI to repair an application the first time it is opened.  The MSI repair function will copy the font files to C:\Windows\Fonts.

§         Windows NT users will need to copy Arialuni.ttf and gilc___.ttf from the Fonts folder on the ArcGIS Schematics 2.2.3 CD to C:\Winnt\fonts on their local machine.
