Installing ArcView 9.1

 

 Preparing to Install

 Before installing the ArcView 9.1 software be sure to

q       Review the minimum requirements below.

q       Review these installation instructions before actually installing.  Before installation decide whether you want to choose a Typical, Complete, or Custom installation.  This will depend upon your individual needs and system constraints.   You will also need to choose which additional components you wish to install, if any.

q       Get your CD from the Research Computing Support Center.

q       Obtain the necessary licensing codes from the Licensing database at https://www.web.virginia.edu/rescomp/ldb/login.asp .

q       Exit all Windows programs and disable any Antivirus software.

 If you have an earlier version of ArcView

ArcView 8.x users

Before installing ArcView 9.1, you must uninstall previous ArcView 8.x installations. You will be required to register ArcView 9.1 when the setup is complete.

ArcView 3.x users

You are not required to uninstall ArcView 3.x to install and run ArcView 9.1. ArcView 9.1 defaults to a different folder and will not conflict with ArcView 3.x.

You can continue to use ArcView 3.x as well as install and use ArcView 9.1 on the same machine.

 

Minimum system requirements for ArcView

Your computer is required to meet these minimum system requirements to install ArcView.

  • Microsoft Windows NT— Intel 4.0 Service Pack 6a
  • Microsoft XP

(hereafter collectively referred to as Microsoft Windows)

 

Internet Explorer

You must obtain and install the appropriate language version of Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher prior to installing ArcView. See Note below.

RAM

 

256 MB minimum

.NET Support feature

A .NET Support feature is available for ArcView. The .NET Support feature will only be available to install if .NET Framework 1.1 is detected on your computer. If you do not see the .NET feature in the Custom installation dialog box, .NET framework 1.1 has not been detected on your machine. You can install .NET Framework 1.1 after installing ArcView, then use Add/Remove to add the .NET Support feature to ArcView. 

Note:  Users who have .NET Framework 2.0 Beta installed will NOT be able to install ArcView.  Microsoft is aware of this bug and has plans to remedy it.

Tip

The disk space requirements for each of the installation components is provided in the Setup program.

Some features of ArcView, such as ArcCatalog metadata, thumbnail views, the ArcMap Visual Basic Editor and internet map services features (see the Using ArcCatalog book for more information about these features), require Microsoft Internet Explorer Version 6.0 or higher.

If your computer does not include Internet Explorer Version 6.0 or higher, the ArcView setup will notify you of the missing requirement and exit. You must obtain and install Internet Explorer, then run the ArcGIS Desktop setup again.

Installation

 

Note:  If you are presented with Microsoft Error 1904 during the installation process, please see Step 22 below. 

 

Step 1. Insert the CD and the installation program should automatically begin.   Select the first radio button – “Install ArcGIS Desktop.”  Click Next.

 

 

 

Step 2. Wait while the program prepares for installation.

 

 

 

Step 3. Click Next.

 

 

 

Step 4.  Choose to accept the license, and click Next.

 

The “Complete” installation is recommended if disk space allows.  This choice allows licensing of the following extensions which may be needed at a later time:

 

  • 3D Analyst
  • ArcPress
  • ArcScan
  • Geostatistical Analyst
  • Maplex
  • Publisher
  • Spatial Analyst
  • StreetMap
  • Survey Analyst
  • Tracking Analyst

 

Step 5. Choose Complete and click on Next.

 

 

Step 6. If possible, use the default destination folder, and click Next.

 

 

Step 7.  Click Next to start the installation.

 

Step 8. Wait while the software is being installed

 

 

 

Step 9. Once the software is installed, click on OK.

 

 

 

Step 10.  You will be prompted to register the product and the ArcGIS Desktop Administrator should open automatically.  Choose to Register Single Use and Extensions, and click on register now.

 

 

Step 11. Click that you have installed ArcView and need to register.

 

Step 12.  Registering over the internet is the easiest method.  Make sure you have an internet connection before proceeding and click Next.

 

Step 13.  Enter the personal information about yourself.

 

 

 

Step 14.  Choose Organization, Industry, and Yourself as below in addition to completing the first three fields.

 

 

Step 15.  Enter the main ArcView Registration Number from the licensing database.

 

Step 16.   Choose to register your extensions now and click on Next.

 

Step 17.   Enter the registration numbers for the various extensions and click Next.

 

Step 18.   Do not evaluate other extensions and click on Next.

 

 

Step 19.   It may take a few minutes for completion of the registration process.

 

 

Step 20.  Click on Finish.

 

Step 21.  Obtain appropriate patches from ESRI and apply them.

 

Step 22.   Problem:  Issues with Windows XP SP2 and ArcGIS 9.1 products

 

Error Message

Attempting to install ArcGIS products on a machine with a processor that supports "D.E.P" (data execution prevention) and Windows XP Service Pack 2 results in a failed installation. This includes the AMD Athlon 64 Family processors, as well as newer Intel Xeon, Pentium 4, Pentium M or "Centrino" processors, and Celeron-D processors. The following error message or similar is returned:

For ArcGIS 9.1:
"Error 1904: failed to register c:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Bin\xmlsupportui.dll" (or 3dsymbolsui.dll)

Various other DLL's fail to register during the process.

 

Cause

As of Windows XP SP2, Microsoft has enabled Data Execution Prevention (DEP); a feature that is included in newer processor series from AMD and Intel. Data execution prevention (DEP) is a set of hardware and software technologies that perform additional checks on memory to help protect against malicious code exploits. Intel refers to their version of DEP as XD or "execution disabling bit". AMD refers to their version of DEP as the "NX-bit" or "No Execute bit".

 

Solution or Workaround

Disable DEP in Windows XP SP2 using the steps below.

Users with Intel processors may also need to disable the "XD" or Execution Disabling Bit in their computer's CMOS/BIOS. Since each computer's CMOS is different, reference the computer's manual or contact the manufacturer of the computer in question for assistance with this step.

 

 WARNING: The instructions below include making changes to essential parts of your operating system. It is recommended that you backup your operating system and files, including the registry, before proceeding. Consult with a qualified computer systems professional, if necessary.

ESRI cannot guarantee results from incorrect modifications while following these instructions. Therefore, use caution and proceed at your own risk.

  1. Verify the Administrator account is running for Windows XP.
  2. Go to Start->Control Panel and choose the System applet.

 XP Home users may need to choose the "Classic View" link to be able to see the System applet.

  1. Click on the Advanced tab.
  2. Select the Settings button under Startup and Recovery.
  3. Locate and change the boot.ini, by clicking on the Edit button, and then change the string /NoExecute=OptIn to /NoExecute=AlwaysOff.
  4. Save the file and reboot.

    Now ArcGIS should install with no error 1904 messages.
  5. After installation, change the boot.ini back to its original state, returning the added layer of security.

    Below are the different switches for the NoExecute parameter.

    The boot.ini file switches:

    /NoExecute=OptIn - This is the default. DEP is enabled. There are four options to this switch:
    - OptIn - Default setting. Only Windows system binaries are monitored by DEP.
    - OptOut - Enables DEP for all processes. Users can create a list of applications which are not monitored by DEP using the DEP configuration options listed in the System Control Panel applet.
    - AlwaysOn - Enables DEP for all processes. DEP is always applied, and exceptions lists are ignored and not available for users to apply.
    - AlwaysOff - Disables DEP.
    /execute - Disables DEP.

  This instance of the 1904 error occurs only on computers running Windows XP Service Pack 2 on hardware that supports the "NX-bit" or "DEP" feature.
