ArcGIS

ArcGIS is a family of software products (ArcView, ArcEditor, ArcInfo, ArcGIS extensions, and ArcSDE) that form a complete Geographical Information System. See Introducing ArcGIS Desktop for a brief overview of the products.

ArcView

ArcView is a desktop Geographic Information System in the Windows environment. ArcView is the core collection of applications that provides data visualization, query, analysis, and integration capabilities along with the ability to create and edit simple geographic features. Several specialized Extensions may be installed in conjunction with ArcView. Faculty and staff may obtain an ArcView CD and license from Research Computing.

ArcView is available for faculty, staff and on University owned computers for students. Currently available at University of Virginia are ArcView 8.3 and ArcView 3.3.

You may install version 3.x and version 8.x on the same machine. What you may NOT do is mix versions that differ in the decimal portion and which have the same primary number, e.g., 3.2 and 3.3.

Before obtaining ArcView, it is important to be familiar with the system requirements for these versions to better determine your needs.  ArcView 8.3 has far greater system requirements than ArcView 3.3, requiring Window NT or greater and a minimum of 128 MB of RAM (256 recommended). ArcView 3.3 requires Windows 98 or greater and 24 MB of RAM.

For licensing information and installation support, contact the Research Computing Support Center.  For technical support with ArcView and extensions, contact the Geospatial & Statistical Data Center.

ArcInfo

In addition to providing all the capabilities of ArcView, ArcInfo allows creation and editing of multiuser geodatabases and coverages. If you want the classic user interface (ARC, ARCEDIT, ARCPLOT, AML, etc.) then you can install ArcInfo 8.3 under a floating network license.

Faculty, staff and student ArcInfo users at the University can also run ArcInfo from home computers using the floating network licenses by first establishing an internet connection over UVA-Anywhere through an Internet Service Provider (ISP) so that the local ArcInfo installation can communicate with the license manager on ITC's Unix server.

If faculty or staff need to use ArcInfo 8.3 at a remote site, then the installation requires a hardware key (dongle) for either a printer or USB port and a special license issued by ESRI that is associated with that particular hardware key. Contact Research Computing Support with your requirements so that we can determine the best option for your situation.
