ArcView

ArcGIS is a family of software products that form a complete Geographical Information System. ArcView, is the core collection of applications that provides data visualization, query, analysis, and integration capabilities along with the ability to create and edit simple geographic features. Several specialized Extensions may be installed in conjunction with ArcView.

Availability

The University has a site license for both ArcView 3.3 and 9.0 for use by faculty and staff. Students may use these products on University owned computers only. If you are using ArcView in conjunction with a course, find out from your instructor which version you will be using. ArcView is available in labs and classrooms on grounds. The license codes are available by registering on the licensing webpage.

You may install ArcView version 3.x and version 9.0 on the same machine. What you may NOT do is mix versions that differ in the decimal portion and which have the same primary number, e.g., 3.2 and 3.3.

Before obtaining ArcView, it is important to be familiar with the system requirements for these versions to better determine your needs.  ArcView 9.0 has far greater system requirements than ArcView 3.3. ArcView 3.3 only requires Windows 98 or greater and 24 MB of RAM.

As an alternative to ArcView, faculty, staff and students, on or off grounds with an internet connection, can install ArcInfo 9.0. ArcInfo 9.0 is quite comprehensive and includes all the functionality of ArcView 9.0 and more.

In order to use the ArcView software, eligible users (faculty or staff only) must obtain the ArcView software CD as well as a license file. The software is available on CD-ROM from the Research Computing Support Center in Wilson Hall, room 244 (243-8800).

Getting Started

Installing ArcView 9.0

Getting Help

ITC handles the contract and licensing of the software and any administrative matters with ESRI. Questions or concerns about ESRI administrative matters, software distribution, etc. should be e-mailed to ESRI-Consult.

Technical support and assistance is primarily handled by Geospatial and Statistical Data Center, Alderman Library (Michael Furlough, Director). The most efficient way to handle most trouble calls is to e-mail ESRI-Consult with as much detail on the problem as possible including all the steps you use and error messages received or other aids in debugging. If the question cannot be solved locally, they can then send your information to ESRI and have them contact you directly. The goal is to get as much documentation as possible of the problem.
