Installation Instructions for ArcGIS Using a Dongle

You MUST be connected to the UVa network in order to use ArcGIS. If you are trying to use ArcGIS from an off-grounds location, you must install UVa Anywhere. Alternatively, for those working in the field, or without a connection to the Internet, FACULY & STAFF only may purchase a Dongle for $40. This key sentinel and the license file sent to you after purchase function as a license manger. These are instructions for using a dongle AFTER you have install ArcGIS.

Installing and Configuring your Dongle

  1. Go to the Scholars' Lab in Alderman Library or the Research Computing Lab in Brown SEL to obtain your dongle (USB or Serial Port).
  2. You must have a CHECK made out to the University of Virginia or a department charge code (PTAO) in order to purchase a dongle. We do NOT accept cash or credit cards.
  3. In order to configure your computer we need:
    1. Your computer type (IBM, Dell, etc.)
    2. Your computing ID (i.e. mst3k)
    3. Your ACTUAL computer name
      1. To find this locate the "My Computer" icon on your desktop or on your Start Menu
      2. RIGHT click on the icon and LEFT click on "Properties" located near the bottom of the available list
      3. One of the available tabs says "Computer Name"-- click on this tab
      4. Look at the second line which reads Full Computer Name. this is your actual computer name.
  4. We will sell you a dongle with an 8 digit number on it starting with 37xxxxxx
  5. You will be emailed a file from KeyCodes with the title: 9.x ESRI license file for [your dongle number]
    1. Do NOT delete this file! If you do, your ArcGIS will not work.
    2. There are detailed instructions in the file about what to do with the file
    3. Right click on the attachment to "Save As..." .
    4. In general, you will want to place this .efl9 (that's E-F-L-9) file in the same folder (C:\Program Files\ArcGIS) as your ArcGIS. No matter where you decide to store it, make sure you remember where you placed it!
  6. Install the ArcGIS License Manager off of the ESRI installation disk.
  7. When the License Manager Setup shows the Import License File, browse to the location in which you stored your .efl9 file
  8. The License File Summary should come up with some information that has been entered by the .efl9 file. click Next->
  9. During Installation Summary click Install->
  10. The License Manger will continue to install until you get an Installation Complete Message, and the prompt to restart your computer.
  11. Select Yes, I want to restart my computer now, and click Finish->
  12. While you are rebooting, plug your dongle in. If you get an error stating that your Sentinel SuperPro hardware has not been installed, just click OK
  13. You are NOT finished yet--ArcMap and any otherArcGIS software will not work yet!
  14. Go to your Start Menu-> All Programs->ArcGIS->Desktop Administrator
  15. When the menu opens up, select License Manager from the menu
  16. The License Manager (for floating software products) box on the right will appear as "Not_Set". Click Change...
  17. When the Change License Manager box appears, type localhost -one word, all lower case
  18. Click OK, and then Apply.
  19. Click OK.
  20. Go to Start->Programs->ArcGIS->and ArcMap to see if your installation was successful.
  21. One possible problem that occurs frequently is that your computer will forget that it is using a dongle
  22. To remedy this (and you may have to do this everyday) go to your Start Menu-> All Programs->ArcGIS->License Manager (9.x) and select Update License from the menu
  23. Browse to your license file, the .efl9 file, and select it
  24. Go to your Start Menu-> All Programs->ArcGIS->Desktop Administrator
  25. When the menu opens up, select License Manager from the left side of the menu
  26. The License Manager (for floating software products) box on the right will appear as "Not_Set". Click Change...
  27. When the Change License Manager box appears, type localhost -one word, all lower case
  28. Click OK, and then Apply.
  29. Click OK.
  30. Go to Start->Programs->ArcGIS->and ArcMap to see if your installation was successful.
