Ansys Installation on Windows

Users who wish to install Ansys on a PC running Windows 2000/XP, which is connected to the University network, can come to the Research Computing Support Center in room 244 of Wilson Hall to obtain a free copy on CDROM.

If the PC is located on-Grounds, it is automatically using the UVa network. For off-Grounds computers, the UVa Anywhere VPN client must be used. It is advisable to install and test the VPN client before installing Ansys. The VPN client is not required for the installation process, but it must be activated before any attempt is made to use Ansys from an off-Grounds computer.

If The installation of Ansys goes as follows:

  1. Download the server information code from the Licensing Database.

  2.
  3. The software will first present a GUI with a number of selections. Click on "Install Ansys 10.0" to begin the installation. Read and agree to the license, then select Next. The default location is usually acceptable so Next continues - if a different location is desired one may Browse to the requested directory. At this point a list of all possible components will appear. Most of the components additional to the base system are related to interfacing with various CAD programs. The standard installation will have all components available for the platform selected. Most users can perform a standard installation and can simply click Next at this point. If disk space is at a premium, however, some of the components can be omitted. In this situation, most users can skip LS-DYNA (we do not have a general license for this product), the distributed domain solver (not useful on a single machine with a single cpu) and the customization tools. The connections to CAD programs not available to the user, such as CATIA and ProEngineer, can probably also be omitted; connections to SAT/Autocad and Parasolve should probably be retained regardless of the status of those particular programs.

  4.
  5. The program will show a progress bar, along with a number of promotional banners for the product. Installation may be slow so be patient.

  6.
  7. After the installation of the program files is completed, it will present a screen to run the licensing setup. Click Next. It will first ask whether the machine is a license server. The answer is NO. Next it asks "Do you want to continue with setup to configure this system to be a client system?" The answer is YES. Do not change the port number; continue directly to the license-server specification. Next will come a screen with a selection between 1 or 3 license servers. Select "3 license servers." A screen with three blank text-entry fields will appear. The names of the servers are obtained from the "Access License Codes and Program Files" action at the Licensing Database. You may enter them in numerical order.

  8.
  9. After completing the licensing, the initial splash screen returns. The installation is now complete and you may select Exit and then Finish.
