Installation Instructions for SPSS Amos 6.0 for Windows

Terms of Use: For use by Faculty and Staff at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia only. You are permitted to use this program as long as you are associated with the University and have an office in Charlottesville where you work at least twice a week. When your employment is terminated or you leave the University, you MUST destroy all copies of the site-license version of SPSS for Windows and delete your license in the online research software database (https://www.web.virginia.edu/rescomp/ldb/login.asp).

AMOS 6 System Requirements

Make sure that these system requirements are met before attempting to install AMOS.


Installation

Installation of AMOS is a three step process:

  1. Registering in the ITC Research Computing Support Licensing Database
  2. Downloading the AMOS 6 installation file. (You may obtain an installation CD from our Center in 244 Wilson Hall if you are unable to download the file.)
  3. Installing the software on your computer.
  4. Completing the licensing process by using the License Authorization Wizard.

1. Registering in the Licensing Database

  1. Log into the Licensing Database at https://www.web.virginia.edu/rescomp using your last name and university ID (usually your Social Security Number).
  2. Under "Available Licenses" find and highling "SPSS/AMOS 6 for Windows," then click "Submit." This will take you to the End-User Licensing Agreement (EULA).
  3. Answer the questions concerning the EULA appropriately, provide the necessary information about the locations you are installing the software, and click "Submit." This will take you to the "License Codes and Program Files" page. Follow the directions in the next step below.

2. Downloading the AMOS 6 Installer

The installer may only be downloaded from the Licensing Database. The directions in the step above will take you to the "License Codes and Program Files" page for Amos 6.

  1. Save the installation file to your computer. This may be accomplished by either clicking on the "UVA-amos6.exe" link directly and selecting the "Save" option, or by right-clicking on the link and selecting the option to "Save link as..." or "Save target as..."
  2. Make a note of the authorization code provided on the page. This code is necessary to complete your licensing via the License Authorization Wizard

When Things Don't Work

Under the terms of the Micro Software License Agreement the University and Information Communication and Technology signed to acquire SPSS AMOS for Windows, as well as the End User License Agreement you signed to obtain a copy of the software, you should direct all your questions concerning installation and use to a statistical computing consultant with Information Communication and Technology. You should only contact SPSS, Inc. for assistance after you have FIRST tried to contact ITC. The consultants are located at the ITC Research Computing Support Center in Wilson Hall 244 and can be contacted by telephone at 243-8800 or by electronic mail to
res-consult@virginia.edu. You can also drop by the ITC Resea rch Computing Support Center to discuss your problem or you contact a consultant about setting up an appointment. Before you contact us for assistance, please be sure you have thoroughly checked through this Installation Guide. The majority of calls we receive concerning installation problems are due to missed steps or problems documented in this Installation Guide.

When you contact us for assistance, please be prepared to tell the consultant the make and model of your computer, and the version of DOS, Windows, and SPSS AMOS you are running. Describe in detail what steps and commands you gave and messages you got when the problem arose. You should also be prepared to tell the consultant the contents of your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, your CONFIG.SYS file and your SPSSWIN.INI and AMOS.INI file.


Training

Example files

After installing Amos, all files from the Examples section of the Amos Users' Guide are placed in the Examples directory, below the Amos program files. To read any of these files from Amos Graphics, choose the menu command File -> Open.

Information Communication and Technology provides a two-night, four-hour course on the basic operation and commands of SPSS for Windows, but not for AMOS. The notes from this course are available throughout the year from the Profs Publishing area of the University Bookstore. While this course does not cover statistical analysis using AMOS, it does introduce you to the syntax and commands of SPSS for Windows. In addition, SPSS AMOS for Windows has a Tutorial in the Amos Users' Guide, Version 4.0.

Manuals

The 312-page Amos 4.0 Programming Reference Guide (in Adobe Acrobat 3.0 PDF format) is installed in the Documentation subdirectory during a typical AMOS installation (click here for more details about accessing this guide).

In addition, you may purchase the AMOS 4.0 User's Guide (J.L. Arbuckle and Werner Wothke, 1999, SmallWaters Corporation). This manual should be available in the Newcomb Hall University Bookstore or you can purchase it online at either the SPSS website (www.spss.com/fastcart/fastcart.exe/store/menu.html) or the SmallWaters Corporation website (www.smallwaters.com/books/).
