ITC Announcement/Retirement of Old Host Names

November 18, 2004

Effective Thursday, November 18, 2004, ITC will begin rejecting email addressed to accounts on a number of retired computers (see list below). If ITC has identified you as a recipient of email addressed to one or more of these retired computers, ITC will notify you by sending a message to your current email account.

Email volume to these old addresses is now over 35,000 messages per day. What ITC has heard from many users who receive mail sent to these addresses is that almost all the mail is spam. But there may be some legitimate email being sent to these old addresses.

To help users with affected accounts determine what, if any, legitimate email they are still receiving with these old host names, ITC has developed a Web process at

http://www.itc.virginia.edu/retiredhosts

This site will let a person display sender addresses only of any mail addressed to his/her account id at any of the retired host names. You will be asked to log in with your Home Directory (or blue.unix), Central Mail Service, or HSCmail account and password. ITC has logged only the sender addresses and not the content of these messages; the sender address information has been logged only for the purpose of informing the email's recipient.

Individual senders of these messages will need to be notified of your address change through personal email. To update viable mailing list subscriptions and other listserv addresses, please see the information at
