ITC Announcement/Reduce Spam with Greylisting Service

[September 16, 2004]

On Thursday, September 16th, ITC Network Systems implemented a greylisting service to alleviate the inflow of spam email to U.Va. addresses. The service is available to everyone with mailboxes on the Central Mail Service (CMS), or mail addresses ending in "@virginia.edu". In order to take advantage of greylisting, you must subscribe to the service at the greylisting subscription web site.

Although greylisting can be very effective in the reduction of spam, there is a potential for delayed or failed delivery of email. During testing, ITC identified a few non-spammers that were unable to deliver email to test participants until those addresses were added to the tester's "Acceptlist". Before subscribing, please carefully read the documentation at http://www.itc.virginia.edu/desktop/email/greylisting/.

If you have questions about the service that are not answered by the documentation, you can find out more by sending mail to consult@virginia.edu, or by contacting the ITC Help Desk at 924-3731.
