If you convert and/or delete every list you have, you will cease to receive this message. As majordomo will be available until December 31, 2003, you may allow your lists to exist until that time, but this message will arrive with increasing frequency between now and that time. A MAILMAN BASICS PRESENTATION A free overview of Mailman will be held on: Friday, December 12, 2003 from 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. in Wilson 216. Space is limited to 18. SOME MAILMAN FEATURES Mailman, the new list manager, offers many capabilities that are not available in majordomo, the present email list manager. Three Mailman features are: * interactions for lists administrators and list members are web-based * list administrators can make most list configuration changes as they want, when they want, without waiting for a postmaster to make the change(s) * Mailman offers the ability to have list member email addresses (example: mst3k@virginia.edu) and names (example: M. S. Theatre) in a list Many majordomo list owners have found that with the additional options available in Mailman, some changes to the list configuration in Mailman are needed. Please check the web pages list below for assistance, or send your questions to: postmaster@virginia.edu WEB ADDRESSES FOR MORE INFORMATION ON MAILMAN For more information about Mailman, please go to the web site at: http://www.itc.virginia.edu/desktop/email/mailing-lists/mailman.html Responses to Mailman Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) can be found on the web page at: http://www.itc.virginia.edu/desktop/email/mailing-lists/mm-faq.html MAILMAN LIST CONVERSION PROCEDURE To convert one or more majordomo email lists to Mailman format (this move cannot be reversed!) or to see a list of the names of the lists that you own, or to select majordomo lists to be deleted, you will need: your (the list owner's) email id (example: mst3k) the name of one of your lists the password for that list If you do not have the above, please contact postmaster@Virginia.edu and ask for that information. With the needed information at hand, go to the web site at: https://list.mail.virginia.edu/listconvert/listconvert.html For: Use: Computing ID of list owner: your email id List Name: the name of one of your lists List Password: the password for that list If you want to see a list of all the majordomo lists that you own, you can click the checkbox beneath the text box for list name, to the right of the words: Display all your lists? This display can take some time if you have more than a few lists. Scroll to the bottom of the page. Click the Submit Request button You will be taken to another web page where you will see information about your list. For each list on the page, you can choose to defer your decision (make it at a later time), convert the list to Mailman format, or delete the list. Make your choice by clicking the appropriate button. If you have selected to see a list of all the lists that you own, they will all appear on this page. As your web browser must be open and on the conversion page until all conversions/deletions have completed, you may want to convert/delete only a few lists at any one time, converting others after those conversions/deletions are complete. When all choices have been made, Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the "Submit" button. Again, if you have selected to convert more than a few lists, this process will take some time. Remember: after a list has been converted, you will want to go to the list administration web site to check the initial list configuration. You should be prepared to make one or more configuration changes as the list becomes an active Mailman list: the number of additional options available in Mailman frequently makes these types of small changes desirable.
