Configure Windows XP to Access the cavalier Wireless Network

Requirements

  • Windows XP (Service Pack 2), with all current updates and patches available through Windows Update applied.
  • A Wi-Fi certified wireless card that supports WPA Enterprise (how to tell…).
  • A University of Virginia account and password on Central Mail Service (CMS), ESERVICES, or Blue.unix.
  • Access to a wired network port with access to the internet.
Ignore the balloon pop-ups referring to available wireless service until directed otherwise in the instructions.

Configure Windows XP to Connect to cavalier

Note: If you are configuring your wireless card while off-Grounds, use the Expanded Windows XP Instructions.

  1. Connect your computer with an ethernet cable to the wired network and open a web browser.
    • If your browser automatically connects to the UVa Network Device Registration page, follow the instructions to register your wired connection. Reboot when prompted.
    • If your browser does not automatically connect to the Network Device Registration page, and you are able to visit other websites, your wired connection is already registered and you can continue to the next step.
  2. With Internet Explorer—even if it is not your normal web browser—get a personal digital certificate and following the instructions. Answer the prompts provided and accept the certificate download when asked.
  3. Look for a pop-up bubble similar to the one below; you may need to reboot before it will appear. Click anywhere in the bubble except the "X".
Windows systray popop. Wireless networks detected. One or more wireless networks are in range of this computer. To see the list and connect, click this message.
The Wireless Network Connection window will appear.
  4. From the Choose a wireless network choices, select cavalier, then click the Connect button.
Wireless network connection window with cavalier selected.
  5. The next pop-up balloon should read Click here to process your logon information for the network cavalier. Again, click anywhere but the "X".
  6. The next pop-up should be titled Validate Server Certificate. Click the OK button. If this pop-up does not appear, you need to configure XP to manage your wireless connection.
  7. Unplug your wired connection and open a web browser. When you are automatically connected to the U.Va. Network Device Registration page, follow the instructions to register your wireless connection. Reboot when prompted.
    • NOTE: You will be repeating the registration process from step two, but this time for your wireless connection.
  8. Verify that your system automatically connects to the cavalier wireless network and you can connect to web sites both on and off Grounds.
