Troubleshoot Mac OS X on the cavalier Wireless Network

Issues and Solutions

The Network Device Registration page does not appear
Common reasons the Network Device Registration page does not appear or is not reachable:
  • Your card is already registered. If you can reach sites outside UVa with the connection being set up, you can continue to the next step of your network setup.
  • The wired port on your machine is inactive or bad. Sometimes plugging your computer into AC power solves this problem.
  • Machines configured for fixed addresses and DNS servers will block access.
    1. From the Apple menu (blue Apple icon, top left corner of screen), select System Preferences….
    2. Click the Network icon.
    3. Select Built-in Ethernet or AirPort—depending on which one you are registering—then click the Configure… button.
    4. Select the TCP/IP tab.
    5. Verify that the Configure IPv4 field has Using DHCP selected.
    6. If you made changes, click the Apply Now button.
    7. Close the Network window.
  • The network port at the wall is bad. Call the ITC Help Desk at 924-3731 to report the bad network port.
You keep getting sent back to the network registration page even though you are registered
Reboot after registration.
Your computer does not automatically connect to the cavalier network
  1. From the AirPort icon in the menu bar, select Open Internet Connect….
  2. Click the 802.1X icon (this opens the same window you saw when you double-clicked on cavalier config.internetconnect).
  3. If the Status (bottom left of window) is Idle, click on the Connect button.

Changing your AirPort settings in the Network preferences (System PreferencesNetworkAirPort) to join Preferred networks by default sometimes reduces this problem.

"Login" is not an option in Keychain
This happens if you transfered data from your old computer to your new computer during your initial set-up, or used the Apple data migration tool to transfer data at a later date. Instead of "Login" you may see a keychain with the same name as the ID on your old system. If that appears select that in place of "Login".
Sometimes it is necessary to delete and repair keychains. Call the ITC Help Desk (434-924-3731) for more detailed support and an explanation of the advantages and risks of associated with this procedure.
