Configure Mac OS X (10.4) to Access the cavalier Wireless Network

Requirements

  • Mac OS X version 10.4 (Tiger) with all current updates applied.
  • Correct time and date on your computer.
  • AirPort or AirPort Extreme wireless network card installed.
  • UVa account and password on Central Mail Service (CMS), ESERVICES, or Blue.unix.
  • Access to a wired network port at the University.

Configure Mac OS X to Connect to cavalier

Prepare Your Computer

  1. Connect to the internet via your wired Ethernet connection.
  2. Run Software Update (from the Apple Menu in the upper left corner) to make sure your operating system and other system components (e.g., AirPort software) are up-to-date.

Get the Files You Will Need

  1. Download the Wireless Configuration Bundle to your desktop or your designated download folder.
  2. If it doesn't mount automatically, locate and double-click on the wirelessbundle.dmg file to mount the Wireless Bundle disk image. These files will be used later in the setup process.
  3. Download your Personal Digital Certificate by following the Mac OS X instructions on the personal digital certificates website. Remember the password you used to obtain this certificate (for a later step).

Install Your Personal Certificate

  1. Locate and double-click the personal digital certificate file downloaded in the previous step (the file begins with your computing ID—e.g., mst3k-cert.p12). The Keychain Access and Add Certificates windows will appear (asking if you would like to add the certificate to the keychain).

    1. From the Keychain field of the Add Certificates window, make sure login is selected.
    2. Click the OK button.
    3. When prompted, type the same password you used to obtain the certificate earlier (you need to enter this password only once).
    4. Click the OK button to close the Add Certificates window.
  2. Leave the Keychain Access window open for a later step. Notice that five files have been added to your login Keychain:
    • Your Private Key
    • Your Personal Digital Certificate
    • USHER CA1 v1
    • UVa Standard Assurance USHER SKP 1
    • UVa USHER PKP CA 1

Install the Root Certificate

  1. From the Wireless Bundle disk image you mounted earlier, locate and double-click the usher-root.cer file. The Add Certificates window will appear to ask if you would like to add the certificate to the keychain.

    1. From the Keychain drop-down, select X509 Anchors.
    2. Click the OK button.
    3. To complete the process, you will be asked to enter your password for your computer.
    4. Click the OK button to close the Add Certificates window.

Trust the Root Certificate

  1. In the Keychain Access window, click on Certificates in the left column.
  2. Double-click the USHER CA1 v1 list item.

    1. Click the Details triangle to collapse its section.
    2. Click the Trust Settings triangle to expand its section.
    3. From the Extensible Authentication (EAP) drop-down, select Always Trust.

    4. Close the USHER CA1 v1 window.
  3. Quit the Keychain Access utility.

Configure Your Wireless Connection Settings

  1. From the Wireless Bundle disk image you mounted earlier, locate and double-click the cavalier config.internetconnect file. The Internet Connect window will appear.

    1. You do not need to change anything in this window. Do not fill in your username and password.
    2. Close the Internet Connect window.

Connect to cavalier

Make sure you're in an area covered by the cavalier wireless network. (UVa wireless coverage)

  1. Disconnect your wired ethernet connection.
  2. Click the AirPort menu bar icon [AirPort menu icon, AirPort On] located at the top of your screen. (If AirPort is off [AirPort menu icon, AirPort Off], select Turn AirPort On and then click the AirPort icon again.) From the drop-down menu, select cavalier

    Note: When you connect to cavalier the first time you will need to complete an extra step:

    1. In the Confirm Access to Keychain window, when asked for permission to allow the use of your “Private Key” in the Keychain, click the Always Allow button.

    Note: When connecting to cavalier, you may see Authenticating scroll across the in the AirPort menu bar item as your wireless card negotiates with the wireless access point.

  3. Open a web browser. If you can reach Web sites outside of UVa, registration is complete. If you are not registered, you will automatically connect to the Network Registration web site. Complete registration and reboot.

Once you are connected, you will maintain an encrypted connection unless you do one of two things:

  • Move out of range of the cavalier wireless network
  • Turn off your AirPort card

Check Connection

  1. Click the AirPort menu bar icon to open the AirPort menu, then select Open Internet Connect…. The Internet Connect window will appear

    1. Click the Summary icon.
    2. The 802.1X field will indicate Connected via TLS.
    3. Close the Internet Connect window.
