Executive Summary
Encouraged by technologically astute constituents, pushed by creative faculty, and enabled by a sophisticated computing environment, the University of Virginia has a long been a leader in adopting new computing technologies for instruction, research, and administration. This report on the University's efforts to implement Executive Order 51, parts A and B, demonstrates a continuation of this tradition. As detailed in the following sections, the University has achieved the immediate goal of providing via the Internet the information, forms and applications needed by the members of the University community and the citizens of the Commonwealth to interact with the institution. Also documented are several initiatives the University has launched to address the broader objective of Executive Order 51, to use the Internet to improve and enhance the delivery of services to the institution's customers.

Currently University forms and associated documentation are available through the web at the tier 3 or 4 level. Many are part of larger systems or Web sites that provide related information. Examples are presented in the Status of Current Projects section and illustrate key areas such as student services, conducting business with external constituents, and public service and outreach.

The Initiatives section describes University projects, which redefine business processes and extend the technology infrastructure to fully embrace the e-commerce and e-government paradigms. Included is work on uniform credit card processing and digital signature infrastructures, as well as student Web portal and integrated administrative systems projects.

While the decentralized structure of the University results in many groups contributing to the University's Internet presence, the shared goal is to have all constituencies (internal and external) benefit from the convenience, accuracy, and efficiency of interacting with the University through the Internet.
