Recap of UCIT Efforts during 2005-06

UCIT's concentration for 2005-06 was a continuation of the previous year's goal to focus more attention at the highest levels of the University on information technology's role in support of scholarship and research. The following efforts by UCIT supported substantial progress towards that goal:

  • Presentations to Leonard Sandridge, Gene Block and Ariel Gomez:
    • A UCIT presentation to Leonard Sandridge on November 21, 2005, included presentations by David Germano, John Hawley, and Jeff Holt (illustrating the areas of humanities & social sciences, science & engineering, and teaching & student life).
    • A similar presentation was made on January 31, 2006, to Gene Block, Ariel Gomez, and members of their staff.
  • UCIT worked closely with Development staff on incorporating IT potential and resource needs into the Capital Campaign case statement:
    • Held a productive meeting with Bob Sweeney in September 2005 to learn more about the development process and how it might come to include information technology (IT) needs and goals at U.Va. Bob Sweeney's suggestions included: a dedicated Development officer for IT; find a BOV champion for IT; get Casteen excited about IT; assemble a group of faculty profiles, demos, and/or presentations that could be used for campaign purposes and events.
    • UCIT had a member from the Development staff (Tim Redden) for the first time and he was helpful in suggesting development strategies and a framework for IT interests. Tim has begun to identify UCIT members who may be useful as consultants in advising how to approach particular prospects.
    • UCIT also collaborated closely with Bill Sublette throughout the year on how to incorporate IT resource needs and aspirations into UVa's capital campaign statement.
    • At UCIT's suggestion, Bill Sublette has begun interviews and photo sessions with faculty whose work features innovative use of IT for the purpose of developing profiles to use in development (so far David Germano and Kirk Martini, with others to follow).
    • Recommendations for funding opportunities in three broad areas (Humanities & Social Sciences, Science & Engineering, Teaching & Student Experience) were discussed and developed during the year. A SEAS-initiated IT Research Task Force had very similar charges and goals, so that group, with John Hawley as their Chair and liaison to UCIT, developed recommendations for that area.
  • Worked with the Provost Office on the University's 10 year strategic plan:
    • Milton Adams asked UCIT to review and respond to the draft 10 year strategic plan. The committee focused on how to improve and integrate the presentation of IT initiatives in the draft plan. Kirk Martini submitted UCIT's response to Milt Adams on May 11, 2006.
