NBIS Committee Meeting on April 17, 1997

Attending: Louise Dudley, Bob Leheup, Janet Sakell, Gordon
Stewart, Nancy Tramontin, Josie Pipkin, Melinda Baumann, Glen Bull,
Alice Howard, John Unsworth.

I. Faculty Senate - Electronic Communications (Louise)
Louise attended the faculty senate and gleaned that
faculty feel that 1) Classrooms need improvement and
    2) Too few rooms equipped for electronic access.
Reports by the schools are available on the web.

II. Yahoo Magazine Survey (Louise)
Louise reported that UVa had been contacted by the writer
of the Yahoo Magazine Survey. UVa was ranked 68th out of
100 schools surveyed as "most wired."

III. Electronic Communications Task Force (Louise)
Louise updated the committee on the task force's progress
and discussions about: push-pull and other technologies,
pointcast evaluation, types of communications, levels of
approval, etc. Task force needs to consider the "culture"
and "prevailing view" of the University community.

IV. "Old" Gopher Holes/Information (Louise)
Louise to followup with Tim Sigmon.

V. Year 2000 Request (Chip German)
Chip has requested a link to the Year 2000 information on the
main IT page. Nancy felt that the subheadings are underutilized
on this page but that the 18 months requested by Chip that this
link remain active was too lengthy.

VI. UVa Homepage Revamping (Nancy)
Nancy has talked with Linda Watson (HSC). Committee discussed
asking those who use the page how we should improve it; providing
both a high- and low-end version of the page; whether or not
to use Frames or Java scripts; how to profile the typical user
(some ITCWeb statistics may help with this); how to provide
information on upgrading browsers; maintenance issues with two
versions of the homepage. It was suggested that the existing
page be kept as the "low-end" version of the page and that a
new "high-end" page be designed; as browsers are upgraded, the
new "high-end" page would become the next "low-end" version.
Some discussion of whether changing servers (to Apache or DynaWeb)
could change what the pages look like.

VII. Webmaster's Report (Melinda)
New links to the HSC page are working. Edward Gaynor will be
transferring his webmaster duties to Barbie Selby.
