Network-based Information Services Committee November 16, 1995 Meeting Location: Peabody 110 Time: 8:15 a.m. Attending: Louise Dudley (chair), John Unsworth, Josie Pipkin, Edward Gaynor, Janet Sakell, Alice Howard, Glen Bull, Gina Bull, Tim Sigmon, John Jackson, Melinda Baumann, Nancy Tramontin, Robert Leheup. Distributed: Agendas; News & Events at the University web pages (Josie); Arts & Sciences web page (Edward); Point communication. Brief Overview of UCIT Meeting (Louise) UCIT has identified training needs too broad for NBIS to deal with. Ed Ayers has drafted a letter to VPs for technology and technology training money. Four of the top nine budget addenda are for technology/technology training. UCIT is also discussing off-grounds access issues. Glen asked how UCIT news is getting back to deans and department chairs; it was noted that ACAC members should go to their school committees and share info. I. News & Events web page work group update (Josie) Josie presented her reorganized News & Events web page and committee members offered suggestions for changes including reordering items on the page. Some concern raised over there being three Academic calendars and that all links should point to the Registrar's copy. II. Commercial Activities on the Internet (Gina/Dolly) Gina polices uva.want-ads and uva.general and uses the University Equipment Use policy in dealing with problems. Gina listed several examples of "incidents" and how she has handled things in the past; many postings fall into a "grey area" and she usually only takes action when there are complaints lodged. It was noted that there are philosophical differences between web and newsgroup or mailing list activities (info you seek vs. that which seeks you). John U. wondered if we shouldn't create a newsgroup for these kinds of postings. Dolly suggested that most vendors don't want electronic access to the University at this point. She thinks that linking vendor pages to someone like PAMS' page is appropriate and a good way to provide info about these companies to University clients. NBIS will not draft a policy on commercial use at this time. [John U. mentioned his meeting with Tim Rose and Jeffrey Plank to discuss "Service Bureau" concept that Gordon Stewart had advanced at a previous meeting. VMEDNET project is similar in scope and function.] III. Edward presented the newest version of the Arts & Sciences page. Committee suggested changes and commented that departments need to budget for their own pages, both creation and maintenance resources. For CLAS, the account will remain on minerva but E. Fortune will need to provide help and training to CLAS staff. IV. Tim Sigmon noted that the Harvest search software was ready; there is some fine-tuning to do. Next meeting: 12/14/95 at 8:15am in Peabody 110 jcs.12/11/95
