NBIS Agenda for Meeting on March 18, 1999

Our next meeting -- this Thursday, March 18, at 9:30 in Peabody 110 --
picks up on several strands from our last one.

-- Martha Blodgett, associate Univ librarian for information
technology, will tell us more about the library interest group that John
Unsworth mentioned. This is the group that's developing standards &
guidelines they hope individual faculty members, as well as U.Va.'s digital
centers and administrative departments, will follow when putting together
collections of digital images for their own purposes. Librarians rightly
are thinking down the road about archival complications.

-- Jim Jokl, director of communications and systems for ITC, will
bring us up to date on the project to create a one-stop place for people at
U.Va. to update their directory information. This has implications for
the second-level Search/Directory page we've been discussing, and perhaps
for ISIS online. (Bob LeHeup unfortunately will be away, but I've copied
below his update on the ISIS project, which does seem to be arriving sooner
than Bodo's.)

-- Also below is a revised draft of our mission statement, which I
hope incorporates what you all meant. We can discuss further if you want,
before we put it forward.

Let me know if you have other items for the agenda. Hope to see you
Thursday. Louise

Update from Bob:

>I was a bit premature in saying the other day that ISIS Online might
>be operational by next week's N-BIS meeting, but we are close. Even
>though I vowed to never mention ISIS Online again until it was
>actually up and working, I do have some news to report to the
>committee.
>
>The ITC development team has made great progress--more than we had
>made in a full year on the previous project--using a software
>product called Crossplex. They have a system (which I have used
>successfully) that is performing well in the development mode. There
>are some bugs--as is to be expected--but they are relatively minor
>and ITC is confident that they can be worked out within a week or so.
>We've chosen April 1 as the date on which to determine if ISIS Online
>is ready to go live.
>
>The focus has been on duplicating the functions available through
>the telephone, with the addition of an address change function. The
>initial phase of the project will enable students to change their
>PIN, change their address, review grades from previous semesters, and
>view their current course schedule. We intend to have the ability to
>add and drop courses available in mid-April.
>>
>Ann Antrobus said she would try to attend the meeting in my place,
>but she wasn't certain that she would be able to do so. As for the
>question of a "change address" function for students in whois, we
>would simply want a link to ISIS Online.
