Alternative Ways to Access Newsgroups
ITC retired the Usenet network news service on December 19, 2007.
Access to newsgroups via news.virginia.edu will no longer be possible after that time. No local newsgroups will exist, including uva.want-ads.
In recent years, technologies including the Instructional Toolkit, weblogs, private Web services, and instant messaging have become alternative avenues for accessing Usenet services and content. Four areas of popular use of the UVa Usenet service and the current alternatives are listed below.
- Course Discussions
- uva.want-ads
- Craigslist (Web interface)
- Charlottesville Freecycle Yahoo Group
- UVaCollab joinable group (prototype), UVa Want Ads (requires NetBadge authentication). Instructions for joining.
- Virginia Athletics Ticket Marketplace
- TheSabre.com Ticket Exchange
- International newsgroups
- Alternative 1: Subscribe to a service. Use Google to search for "newsgroup service" or look at the compilation posted at http://www.newsgroupservers.net/
- Alternative 2: Use your Internet Service Provider's (ISP) Usenet server, if available. A compilation is posted at http://www.usenettools.net/ISP.htm
- Alternative 3: Use the Google Groups Web interface at http://groups.google.com/
- Alternative 4: InterBulletin.com provides a free reading and posting service to around 30,000 newsgroups.
- Alternative 5: Giganews and Supernews offer for-fee access to all newsgroups, including the "binaries" newsgroups, for a monthly fee.
- Local newsgroup versions of national mailing lists
Individuals will need to subscribe personally to any mailing list that has been previously available as a newsgroup in the uva.mailing-list hierarchy.
