Configuration Instructions
Requirements
You must be a faculty, staff, or student at UVa to follow these instructions, and your computer must have Wi-Fi certified wireless card. If you are a guest of the University or are setting up wireless access for a guest, please see the guest access instructions.
Setup Options
There are 3 options for setting up your access to the UVa cavalier wireless network:
- Use Option 1 to run the automated Network Setup Tool with a wireless connection.
- Works for: Windows Vista and XP, and Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) and 10.4 (Tiger).
- Use Option 2 to run the automated Network Setup Tool with a wired connection.
- Works for: Windows Vista and XP, and Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) and 10.4 (Tiger).
- Use Option 3 for manual setup or for all other operating systems.
Option 1: Use the Automated Tool with a Wireless Connection
- Connect to the Welcome_to_UVa_Wireless network:
On Windows Vista: Select “Connect To” from the Start Menu, or right-click on the computer monitor icon in the system tray and select “Connect to a network.” Select Welcome_to_UVa_Wireless from the list and click “Connect.” Then click “Connect Anyway” (since after the setup tool finishes, you will no longer be on an unsecured network).
On Windows XP: Click on the “Wireless networks detected” popup in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen, or right-click on the computer monitor icon in the system tray and select “View Available Wireless Networks.” Select Welcome_to_UVa_Wireless from the list and click “Connect.” Then click “Connect Anyway” (since after the setup tool finishes you will no longer be on an unsecured network).
- Open a Web browser to access the Network Setup Tool. Once you’re connected to Welcome_to_UVa_Wireless, open a Web browser, and you’ll be automatically directed to the ITC Network Setup Tool download site.
- A link to some “Troubleshooting Tips” is located on the right-hand side of this page, if needed.
- Download and run the appropriate ITC Network Setup Tool for your system. The Tool will automatically configure your computer to access the encrypted UVa wireless network cavalier.
- If at any time you have problems with wireless, you may be able to repair them by running the Tool again.
- After the Tool runs, ensure that cavalier is your wireless network. If the Network Setup Tool did not make cavalier your preferred wireless network (or list it first at the top of your available wireless networks), be sure to make it your preferred network and list it at the top.
- You will only use Welcome_to_UVa_Wireless to get established on the network for the first time; after that, you will be connecting to cavalier instead.
Option 2: Use the Automated Tool with a Wired Connection
- Access the Network Setup Tool. While your computer is already connected to the Internet via a wired, Ethernet connection, go to the ITC Network Setup Tool download site.
- Download and run the appropriate ITC Network Setup Tool for your system. The Tool will configure your computer to access the encrypted UVa wireless network cavalier.
Option 3: Configure Manually Using Instructions for Your Operating System
This will require first connecting to the UVa network with a wired connection.
- Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
- Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
- Windows Vista
- Windows XP
- Other operating systems and older Mac and Windows versions (unencrypted)*
*ITC provides limited support for these operating systems to connect to the unencrypted wireless network.
