Unsupported Device Access to the wahoo Wireless Network
Connecting to UVa’s Unencrypted Wireless Network
[Nov 23, 2009 14:09] Web access to Microsoft Live@edu accounts now works.
This page contains generic setup information that should allow most wireless devices to connect to the UVa wahoo wireless network, which is unencrypted. Due to the large number of aftermarket cards and the difficulty of configuring some operating systems and non-laptop devices, we cannot guarantee a successful connection.
Requirements to Access the wahoo Wireless Network
- Wi-Fi certified device
- IMPORTANT: A wireless card that has been registered on the UVa network
- UVa faculty, staff, and students: Register your wireless card on the Network Registration website.
- University guests: Register using either a PIN or a UVa sponsor who will register your wireless card on your behalf.
ITC highly recommends that:
- Students, faculty, and staff establish an encrypted connection to the cavalier wireless network instead.
- Mobile and smartphone users follow the mobile device instructions.
- Guests make use of any VPN resources provided by their own institutions for network data protection.
How to Configure Your Device to Access the wahoo Wireless Network
You will have to manually configure your device to access the unencrypted wahoo wireless network. Because the wahoo identifier is not broadcast, your device will not automatically discover that it is available. Use the following values to establish a connection:
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Network Name or SSID | wahoo (lowercase) |
| Network type | Infrastructure or AP (not “ad hoc”) |
| Authentication | None/open (but note requirement for network registration, above) |
| Encryption | None (no WEP or WPA; see security statement) |
Consult your card manufacturer’s documentation for how to accomplish this. Beyond that, configuration options are the same for your wireless device that they would be for any wired network adapter.
