Request Wireless Coverage in your Area

The UVa wireless network provides wireless internet access in many locations on Grounds. Users who wish to get wireless coverage in a non-covered area should consult the information in this document for their options.

Request Additional Wireless Coverage

Student Work/Study Areas

If you feel an area where students go to work and study has been overlooked, please email the wireless LAN project manager.

Departments

Departments wishing to speed the deployment of wireless networks in their buildings may contribute to the funding of the project. Any funds provided by departments will be used to install additional wireless access points in their buildings. ITC will often provide up to one centrally funded access point for each unit funded by the department. The approximate cost per installed access point is $650.00. Anyone considering the installation of wireless equipment in their building should contact the ITC wireless LAN project manager to discuss options for accelerating coverage in their area.

Request Permission to Install an Access Point

Departments and individual users may not install Access Points at UVa without permission. The use of the airspace may cause problems with the UVa wireless network. If you do elect to purchase and set up your own access point, it is likely that it will have to be removed when an access point which conforms to the UVa standard is installed in your area. Personal access points will not be supported by ITC in any way.

Personal Access Point Installation Criteria

  • Anyone wanting to install a personal wireless access point must request and receive authorization from ITC before installation. Personal access points will not be allowed where UVa access to its wireless network is already provided.
  • Wireless access points, as with all devices connected to the University's network, are subject to disconnection or restriction if they interfere with the normal operation of the network.
  • Owners are fully responsible for securing and appropriately managing their wireless access points.

Special Security and Responsible Use Concerns Associated with Wireless Access Points

  • Consumer access points are insecure and can be problematic in their factory default configurations. Students are responsible for configuring any wireless access point so that it does not interfere with the DHCP function of the University network or otherwise interfere with network service to anyone else in the University community. Improperly configured access points will be blocked from the network.
  • Students must restrict who has access to their wireless access point: the use of access points by non-UVa users is forbidden and must be prevented in order to safeguard the University's restricted resources.
  • Access point owners are responsible for all users of their access point. Any security or usage problem associated with an access point, including excess bandwith usage, will be considered the responsibility of the Access Point's owner.
  • Wireless access points are vulnerable to identity theft. Access points must be configured to use appropriate encryption. Without proper encryption, someone with a good antenna could steal unencrypted information including passwords which would allow access to email accounts and other personal information.
