ITCWeb: University of Virginia People Search
Using the University of Virginia People Search
About the People Search
The University of Virginia home
page includes a searchable on-line directory called People
Search. This directory contains information derived from ITC's
user database and from the printed University directory. This
information includes names, both official and otherwise, telephone
numbers, office addresses, and electronic mail information. The People
Search database gets updated once a day. This service is available to
both members of the University community and to people outside of UVa.
Common searches include lastname, firstname or firstname lastname
or Computing ID. Any exact matches for a search will be
highlighted in yellow in the results.
Using the People Search
This LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol)-driven search engine
uses a text search within one or more data fields. Search results that
match all of the data entered will be returned. Partial search parameters
can be used in the name and phone fields. A partial in the phone field
will only search the last 4 digits of the Office Phone number. Searches
on the UVa Computing ID have to match exactly what's entered.
For example, if you were searching for a person whose last name is
Smith, you can simply type Smith in the search field to
retrieve as many people whose last name contains Smith as the system
allows. If you are looking for all the Smiths that work for ITC, you
can type in Smith , choose ITC from the
Department pull down menu and you
will get a listing of all the people in ITC whose entry contains the
word Smith.
The Common Name field can be used to search for people who may use
a name that differs from their legal name. For example, a search
can be made for the Common Name Jim Smith when the
last name is Smith and the first name is James.
People Search returns up to 100 matches for a particular
search from off-grounds locations and up to 1000 matches from on-grounds
locations. The system will tell you how many matches were generated by
the words you provided.
