As of July 1, 2008, ITC will no longer offer DSL network connectivity for UVa fraternities and sororities.
Many fraternities and sororities have discontinued ITC's service in favor of third-party providers who now provide faster service at cheaper prices. The University's equipment is very old, having been installed before third-party providers were available in the Charlottesville area. With viable third-party options available to provide this service at higher speeds and lower costs, ITC has decided not to replace its aging equipment and will instead retire the service.
ITC will discontinue the DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) network connectivity for fraternities and sororities when current contracts expire on Monday, June 30, 2008.
After this date, fraternities and sororities will need to contract with a third-party Internet Service Provider (ISP) for high-speed Internet connectivity. In Charlottesville, some third-party ISP options include Embarq (for DSL), Comcast (for cable modem), and a number of broadband offerings. Please check the Charlottesville phonebook for a complete listing of ISPs.
When using a third-party ISP, some UVa resources that were previously accessed without difficulty may have some restrictions. For guidance on accessing these resources please refer to the Access UVa Computing Services from Off-Grounds website.
