Mission
The staff in the Network Systems
group enhances and maintains the hardware and software systems
providing network connectivity and network based services. The
UVA Network is maintained by this group in cooperation with
the Network Operations group. "Netsys" also manages
the servers and software providing electronic mail, news, directory
services, DNS/DHCP, and videoconference support. The equipment
for these services is distributed around grounds, but most of
it is concentrated in the Carruthers Hall Communications Room.
The group also develops standards for network configuration.
With Network Operations, the Network Systems group monitors,
maintains and enhances the network routing and switching infrastructure
connecting buildings at the University to central services and
the Internet. The ITC Operations staff in Carruthers Hall provides
24x7 monitoring for critical systems and contacts Network Systems
and/or Network Operations staff when problems occur.
Network Systems staff work closely with departments deploying
major new services over the networks. Efforts include the School
of Continuing and Professional Studies' delivery of classes
over the NetWork.Virginia network and medical
center projects in telemedicine.
