Usenet News at UVa

Alternative Ways to Access Newsgroups

ITC retired the Usenet network news service on December 19, 2007.

Access to newsgroups via news.virginia.edu will no longer be possible after that time. No local newsgroups will exist, including uva.want-ads.

In recent years, technologies including the Instructional Toolkit, weblogs, private Web services, and instant messaging have become alternative avenues for accessing Usenet services and content. Four areas of popular use of the UVa Usenet service and the current alternatives are listed below.

  • Course Discussions
  • uva.want-ads
  • International newsgroups
  • Local newsgroup versions of national mailing lists
Individuals will need to subscribe personally to any mailing list that has been previously available as a newsgroup in the uva.mailing-list hierarchy. Still-active mailing lists and subscription information follows.
