Frequently-Asked Questions About Off-Grounds Access

Following is a list of questions and answers regarding access to the University network from outside U.Va. Grounds.

Will I have to give up my U.Va. e-mail address or blue.unix account if I use an Internet Service Provider (ISP)?

Using an ISP changes nothing about your U.Va. accounts or e-mail. Our ITC Help Desk can help you if you run into problems configuring your machine for off-Grounds access. The Help Desk is available Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 434-924-3731.

Can I get to my Home Directory and use it if I connect using an Internet Service Provider?

No matter what ISP you use, you should be able to access the Home Directory Service's web interface. If you need to map a drive from your PC to your Home Directory account, however, you will need to run Microsoft NetBios services from your machine to the server. Some ISPs block those protocols. For more information, see the ITCWeb page on Home Directory and Internet Service Providers.
