THE ITC

BUILDING REWIRING PROJECT

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the scope of this project? Which buildings have already been wired?

The ITC Building Rewiring Project includes all of the University-owned buildings on North and Central Grounds. Click here to see a chart of completed and/or pending buildings.

What will it cost?

ITC will cover the installation cost of all communications outlets that are associated with existing, unique phone service. The department may optionally choose to pay to have additional outlets installed (data-only or spare).

What type of wiring will be installed?

The wiring that ITC is installing within each building is Category-5 (unshielded twisted-pair) cabling. This cabling supports many different types of network electronics which range in speed from standard 10baseT Ethernet at 10 Mbps through 155 Mbps

How will this project benefit me?

The Category-5 wiring being installed can operate at significantly higher speeds than the existing 10-Base-2 (coaxial) cabling currently being used to support the data networks in many buildings. The new wiring also enables the construction of a much more reliable and manageable network. As the need for higher performance networking grows, the new cabling will be used with new network electronics to provide significantly higher throughput.

Who is responsible for classrooms in my building?

ITC will install a data-only with video capability communications outlet in any classroom, which is scheduled by the University Registrar's office, within your building.

What if I want new data connections installed?

This project is also an opportunity for departments to plan for future expansion in their office. ITC will install new communications outlets, as requested by your department, however; this installation will carry an installation fee.

Will this project affect my phone service?

No, your current phone service will not be changed or affected in any way.

Will I be able to use my phone and computer simultaneously?

Yes, although now your voice and data communications will be supplied by one outlet, you will still have simultaneous use of your phone and computer.

Does our department have to participate in this project?

The minimum work performed in each building is the installation of new network outlets at each active telephone location. This part of the project is completely centrally funded and does not result in any departmental charges. Departments may decide to have additional outlets installed on a time and materials basis.

Will there be any downtime during the installation process?

During the installation of the new cabling, your existing network will still be available for your use. In the case that this is not possible, ITC will schedule with your department any necessary downtime in advance.

What should I do if a room has more computers than telephones?

ITC with each department in order to integrate your existing network with the new communications network. There are three available options that a department can choose from if they encounter this kind of situation. Click here to see these options.

Can we have fiber-optic or 100-Base-T cable installed now, instead of the 10-Base-T?

At this time, is is not economical for ITC nor for departments to install fiber optic cabling to every outlet. However, the standard cabling being installed is capable of supporting 100-Base-T network connections. ITC will work with departments to meet any specialized needs or requirements for high performance networks.

Who do I contact if I have questions?

You should contact the ITC liaison for this project.
