BUILDING REWIRING PROJECT


Cost Associated with the Building Rewiring Project

The Building Rewiring Project involves the installation of a data network connection everywhere there is an existing active telephone outlet and communications outlets in all classrooms at no charge to the host department if your department is funded by educational and general funds.

As part of this project, your department may wish to install video connections, designed to connect a television set to the UVa Broadband Cable Plant, in your conference rooms. This provides access to cable television-type signals such as French and Russian language programming and the satellite up-link and down-link facilities at Zehmer Hall.

Similarly, now would be a good time to decide on your need for additional data network connections in your offices, based on anticipated personnel growth and changes. There is an installation cost associated for these outlets. However, it is important to note that this installation cost will be significantly less expensive if these outlets are installed as part of the Building Rewiring Project. In addition, total installation cost of these additional outlets may be paid for through our delayed billing program (see Related Information--Loans section).

Your department will also want to purchase Ethernet cards, capable of supporting the twisted pair connections, for your computers in order to take full advantage of the technology available through this project. Almost any IBM-compatible and MacIntosh personal computer or UNIX workstation can be attached to the data network. Many newer machines come with Ethernet cards already installed. The cost per card for those varies by the type of machine and network software required.

Cost estimates for the optional parts of the Building Rewiring Project and Ethernet cards are as follows:




Standard communications outlet (installation cost): $125 to $250 per outlet.

Video option: $50 per video installation.

Ethernet cards: $60 to $120 for standard-bus IBM-compatible and MacIntosh computers to

several hundred for certain types of Apple machines.

Ethernet card installation: approximately $14 per machine.

Connecting cables: $10 per machine.
