Mainframe Retirement Information
As different modules of the UVa Student System Project go live and replace functionality on the UVa Mainframe, it will be retired. A Mainframe Retirement Group has been established by ITC to raise awareness of the retirement dates and deadlines for moving processes and critical data off the mainframe.
Mary Hanna is the Project Manager for this group: mxh3f@virginia.edu or 924-0619. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the mainframe retirement process, please contact Mary directly.

Important Product and Service Notices
- CONTROL-D USERS: There are thousands of files on CONTROL-D that need to be cleaned up. Users not actively using CONTROL-D should be deleting unused or unnecessary files immediately. Users who use CONTROL-D as an archive location for reports should be looking into retention requirements and alternate archive possibilities such as paper or flat-file output, or import into ImageNow. Special Note: Many CONTROL-D files contain SSNs and personal information. Use careful consideration when deciding on how to handle CONTROL-D files.
- ARCHIVED DATA CONVERSION: Data Archived such as GDGs and Strip Files will need to be converted and migrated off the mainframe. An ongoing archived data project continues to convert and flatten mainframe files into generic text files that can be read by other platforms. A dedicated file conversion programmer will work with your technical resource person(s) to identify file formats and required field conversions.
- FOLDING/SEALING and BURSTING/DELEAVING SERVICES: These services will be provided for ISIS users until the migration to the new Student System but discontinued as services are brought live on the new Student System. Before this occurs, users should establish new sources for folding/sealing and bursting/deleaving services. Two such vendors are: UVa Printing & Copying Services for folding and Mailing Services of Virginia.
The mainframe systems group is determining what tools may be available for users to migrate their files off the mainframe. Check back here for more information as it is available. If you have not started planning how to migrate CONTROL-D files off the mainframe, now is the time to start.
If you have files you wish to have converted, you must contact Mary Hanna, the Mainframe Retirement Group Project Manager to ensure your files are on the conversion list. Files that are not specifically requested for conversion will not be converted, and will be deleted during the decommissioning process.
