Prerequisites
- All software installed in public labs must have a license from the software vendor. We will need a license agreement or letter from the vendor stating that you, your department or U.Va. has purchased enough licenses to enable the software to be used by your students. You may wonder how we ensure license compliance in the labs. If so, go to License Compliance below to find out more.
- In order to ensure that all courseware is fully tested and will not compromise the availability of software in our standard workstation environments, we have established deadlines. These deadlines are:
| For classes beginning... | Deadline for submission is... |
|---|---|
| Fall | July 1st |
| Spring | November 1st |
| Summer | April 1st |
While we sometimes accommodate requests for software installation at other times, we cannot guarantee that it will be available on a quicker schedule. We do understand that this can cause some inconveniences, both major and minor, at times, but we hope that everyone will understand our desire to maximize the up-time and availability of our labs and classrooms by trying to maintain strict standards for testing new software.
License Compliance
License compliance of course-related software is ensured through a process called software metering. When we get a request to meter a software package, or to change the way that software is metered, we send a request to the ITC Microsystems group requesting that the software be added to their metered software database. Our request will contain such pertinent information as: Name of software, name of executable file, location of executable file, number of licenses, and the date that metering needs to go into effect. The Microsystems group makes the necessary changes to the metering database, or library.
Once the software information is added to the metering library, a record can be generated and added to a metering log file anytime someone uses the software. From that log, reports can be generated that measure actual use of the software over time.
If there is ever a time that your students complain of not being able to run your software due to license restrictions, please contact lctech@virginia.edu and let us know what software they were trying to run and when they were prevented from using it. We can then put in a formal request to monitor that software over a period of time and generate a report regarding its usage. We have not had any problems to date with students not being able to access software due to licensing restrictions; we want, however, to be sure to take whatever steps we can to optimize availability of software in our labs and classrooms.
